Route overview
- At about 4,718 nm, this trip is beyond the typical nonstop range of light jets and midsize jets and super midsize jets and heavy jets. Ultra Long Range Jets are the smallest category that can usually fly it without a fuel stop.
- There are 8 airport combinations for this trip. Choosing between them changes the flying distance by up to 44 nm, so ground transfer time often matters more than the airport choice.
- Only large-cabin aircraft make this trip nonstop, which puts it at the top of the price range.
- London City Airport has a runway of about 4,948 ft, which limits the aircraft that can use it.

Private jet London to Los Angeles: planning an eleven-hour crossing
A private jet London to Los Angeles flight is the longest of the regular London transatlantic corridors, and it asks more of an aircraft than New York or Miami ever do. Our figures put the great-circle distance at 4,718 nautical miles. The shortest path does not cross the mid-Atlantic at all: it arcs far north, over Greenland and northern Canada, before dropping south-west across the United States to Southern California. On our model, an ultra long range jet flies it nonstop in about 10 hours 45 minutes.
That length sets the tone for the whole trip. It narrows the aircraft that can do it in one go, it shapes crew planning and cabin choice, and it turns the eight-hour time difference into something you plan around rather than something you simply absorb. The data sections above show categories, flight times, airports and estimate ranges. This guide explains what they mean for a flight of this length, and what we look at before we propose an aircraft.
We are a charter broker. We do not own or operate aircraft; we source suitable aircraft from licensed operators, compare them for your dates and look after the details until you land. You can read more about how we work on the JetPriceCheck home page.
Which aircraft fly London to Los Angeles nonstop
Ultra long range: the category built for this route
Our route data names the ultra long range jet as the smallest category with a clear nonstop fit on this route. It carries 12 to 17 passengers in our data and is quoted at about 10 hours 45 minutes. These are the aircraft the long-range business jet market was designed around: large cabins, several zones, a proper sleeping area on many layouts, and the fuel to cross a continent after crossing an ocean.
The right-sized list for this corridor includes the Bombardier Global 5500 and Global 6500, the Dassault Falcon 7X and Falcon 8X, and the Gulfstream G600 and G550. At the top of the range, the Bombardier Global 7500 and the Gulfstream G650 add cabin length and range to spare. Whether a particular aircraft makes the trip nonstop on your date still depends on the passenger load, bags and forecast winds; the operator runs those numbers before confirming.
Heavy jets: marginal, and worth checking
Heavy jets are rated "marginal" in our data, with a modelled time of about 11 hours. That means a heavy jet may make the crossing without stopping in favourable conditions, typically with a lighter load, but it is not something to assume. The westbound flight usually works against the prevailing westerly winds, and winter headwinds can be strong. If a heavy jet is the right cabin for your group but cannot fly the day nonstop, the operator will plan a fuel stop, and we will show you the effect on the schedule.
Smaller jets: a stop is part of the plan
Super midsize, midsize and light jets all carry a fuel-stop fit here. Our table shows about 11 hours 10 minutes for a super midsize, 11 hours 45 minutes for a midsize and 12 hours 20 minutes for a light jet, but those are flying times only. Add at least one stop for fuel, handling and a fresh departure, and the door-to-door day becomes very long. For most travellers on this route, a smaller jet makes sense only when the budget matters more than the time, or when the trip is broken up on purpose with a night somewhere on the way.
Turboprops and VIP airliners appear with an "unknown" range fit. A turboprop is not a practical way to take passengers from London to California. VIP airliners, for groups of 19 to 50 in our data, are arranged case by case. Our aircraft guide compares all categories.
Crew and cabin on an eleven-hour sector
A flight of this length is not simply a longer New York trip. Operators commonly plan an augmented crew, with an extra pilot so that the crew can rest in turn, and the price reflects that. Cabin choice matters as much as seat count: for an overnight or late-day arrival, ask for a layout with a bed or berthing seats, and tell us about dietary needs early so catering can be planned for two full meal services.
London to Los Angeles private jet cost: what the estimates tell you
The nonstop range on our model
All prices on this page come from our pricing model, which is built on published market rates, in US dollars. They are estimates, not quotes and not offers; a firm price comes only from a licensed operator for a specific aircraft and date.
For the ultra long range jet, the model shows about $214,000 to $300,000 one way, or about $268,000 to $375,000 for a return. For a heavy jet, which may need a stop, the range is about $150,000 to $230,000 one way. The smaller categories start lower, from about $69,000 one way for a light jet, but with a stop built in they are a different kind of trip rather than a cheaper version of the same one.
Why a return costs less than two one-ways
Our return estimates are well under double the one-way figures. A one-way charter normally carries the cost of the aircraft flying home empty; a return uses that second sector for you. On a route this long, the empty leg home is a large share of the total, so it pays to price the return together when your stay is short.
When your stay is long, the arithmetic flips. Keeping an ultra long range jet and its crew in Los Angeles for more than a few days adds waiting costs and ties up the aircraft, so two separate one-ways, possibly on different aircraft, can be cheaper.
What moves the London to Los Angeles private jet cost
- Aircraft location. A jet already based in London costs less than one that must position from elsewhere in Europe first.
- Crew. An augmented crew for a long sector adds cost, as do crew hotels if the aircraft waits.
- Dates. Holiday periods and major Los Angeles events reduce the supply of long-range aircraft.
- Airports and customs. Handling, parking and customs arrangements vary between Van Nuys, LAX and any first point of entry.
Our guide to what a private jet costs explains how charter pricing is built. When you want real numbers, request a quote from JetPriceCheck and we will come back with options from licensed operators.
Farnborough to Van Nuys: the airports at each end
Leaving London
Our data lists four London departure airports, with Farnborough and Luton as the typical choices. Farnborough Airport is a dedicated business aviation airport with no scheduled airline service, which is reflected in its Wikipedia entry. It is the natural choice from west London, Surrey and the Thames Valley. London Luton Airport suits north London and the Midlands, and London Biggin Hill suits the south-east. London City Airport is closest to the City, but only aircraft approved for its steep approach can use it, and ultra long range jets suited to this crossing are rarely among them. Our guide to London's private jet airports compares all four.
Arriving in Los Angeles
Van Nuys Airport is the airport our data uses for Los Angeles. It is owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports, the city agency that also runs LAX, and it is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, with an 8,000-foot main runway, according to the airport's own overview. It is the usual gateway for the San Fernando Valley, Beverly Hills, Bel Air and the studios in Burbank, though the drive to the Westside crosses the Sepulveda Pass and can be slow at peak times.
Los Angeles International is the alternative, closer to Santa Monica, the beach cities and El Segundo, and busier with airline traffic. We compare the two on door-to-door time and on how the customs arrival will work.
Customs: where the jet clears into the US
US Customs and Border Protection processes international private flights only at designated airports and at set times, as CBP's general aviation airports page explains. So the first US landing on this trip has to be an airport where CBP can clear the aircraft at your arrival time. The operator decides this and books it: depending on CBP service on the day, the jet may clear at its Los Angeles arrival airport, or clear first at another airport and continue domestically. If a fuel stop is needed anyway, the stop can sometimes double as the customs point. We confirm the plan before you book, so the arrival time you are given is realistic.
The operator also files the passenger manifest through CBP's eAPIS system, which federal rules require no later than 60 minutes before departure. Give us complete passport details early.
Documents: ESTA, visas and the UK ETA
The entry rules are the same as on an airline. Travellers from Visa Waiver Program countries often use an ESTA, but on a private aircraft an ESTA is valid only if the operator is a Visa Waiver Program signatory carrier; CBP publishes the list of signatory carriers. If anyone in your party relies on an ESTA, we check this before quoting.
For the return, visitors who are not British or Irish citizens may need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, as the Home Office ETA factsheet explains. Apply well ahead.
The eight-hour time change, and the Van Nuys curfew on the way home
Los Angeles is normally eight hours behind London. Because the UK and US change clocks on different dates, the gap drops to seven hours for a few weeks in March and around the end of October; NewYork.co.uk lists the dates, which apply across the US.
Westbound, the time change works for you. On our model's ultra long range time of about 10 hours 45 minutes, an 11:00 departure from Farnborough lands at about 13:45 local time in Los Angeles. You arrive in the early afternoon, can stay awake until a normal bedtime and wake up close to local time.
Eastbound, the clock works against you, and this is where Van Nuys's rules matter. The airport's noise restrictions page and the LAWA curfew regulation set out a curfew that prohibits departures between 11 pm and 7 am, apart from exempt flights, with only quieter Stage 3 aircraft allowed to depart between 10 and 11 pm. A common plan for the return is an evening departure, sleep on board and a mid-afternoon arrival in London the next day. That works well from Van Nuys as long as wheels-up is before the curfew window. If you want to leave later, we discuss LAX with the operator.
Seasons, events and demand
Unlike Miami, Los Angeles does not have one dominant season for UK visitors. Demand on this corridor is driven more by business and personal calendars: film, music and technology industry events, family time around the holidays, and sporting fixtures. Around big events, long-range aircraft and FBO parking in Los Angeles can be in short supply, so book early and allow for the aircraft positioning elsewhere during your stay. We do not publish event dates; check the organisers for your year.
Onward from Los Angeles
Many trips continue once you are on the West Coast. A short hop from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, covered on our Los Angeles to Las Vegas page, or a Bay Area meeting via our San Jose to Los Angeles corridor can be flown on a smaller jet that is based locally, rather than keeping the transatlantic aircraft. If your trip also includes the East Coast, our London to New York page covers that crossing. Tell us the whole itinerary up front.
Empty legs on the London–Los Angeles route
Every one-way charter on this route creates an empty sector somewhere, and operators may sell one at a reduced price. On a corridor this long, the savings can be meaningful, but the flight runs on the original client's schedule and can be moved or cancelled. It suits travellers who can move by a day or two, or who need only one direction. Check our current empty-leg listings and tell us your window.
How we arrange your London to Los Angeles charter
- We take the brief: passengers, bags, dates, sleep plans, where you are staying and any ESTA travellers.
- We shortlist aircraft: ultra long range jets that fly nonstop with your load, heavy jets where the operator confirms the range, or a planned stop.
- We plan the arrival: Van Nuys or LAX, and where the aircraft clears customs.
- We present options side by side: aircraft, operator, flight time and the full quoted price with its terms, then coordinate crew, catering and cars.
