Gulfstream G550 charter: the proven long-range workhorse

A Gulfstream G550 charter is often the smartest way to fly a long route privately without paying for the newest aircraft on the ramp. The G550 is the jet that made ocean-crossing business travel routine for a generation of travellers: a development of the Gulfstream V, it entered service in 2003 and stayed in production until around 2021, according to its Wikipedia entry. Hundreds were built, and many still fly for charter operators around the world.

The tiles and tables above show our dataset's view of the aircraft: a published range of about 6,750 nautical miles, a typical cabin of 14 to 16 passengers, a cabin about 6.2 ft high, 7.3 ft wide and 43.9 ft long, about 170 cubic feet of baggage, the corridors it can fly nonstop and the hourly band our pricing model uses for its category. The "In production: No" tile is not a warning. It simply means that every G550 you charter is a used aircraft, so the particular tail and its history matter more than they would with a brand-new type.

We are a charter broker, not an operator. We do not own aircraft. We ask licensed operators what they have available, check the details that separate a good G550 from a tired one, and stay with the trip until you land. Read more about our approach on the JetPriceCheck homepage.

Where the G550 came from

The G550 grew out of the Gulfstream V, the first business jet designed from the outset to link cities such as New York and Tokyo nonstop, as described in the Gulfstream V article. Gulfstream refined the design with aerodynamic changes, a reworked cockpit and a longer range, and the result became one of the best-selling large-cabin jets of its era. It is powered by two Rolls-Royce BR710 engines, and the widely quoted long-range cruise speed is about Mach 0.80.

A short note on the cruise tile above: our dataset lists 488 knots, a published high-speed figure, and the tiles are published manufacturer or public figures, not independently verified. At long-range cruise the G550 flies slower than that, and than a G650; on a seven-hour crossing the difference is typically tens of minutes.

Inside the Gulfstream G550 cabin

The G550 is a stand-up, walk-about cabin, with a flat floor and enough length for three living areas. At about 7.3 ft wide and 6.2 ft high in published figures, it is narrower and a little lower than the later G650, which you notice most in the aisle and in the width of the club seats, but most passengers find it spacious on any sector.

Layouts you will meet on a G550 private jet charter

  • Forward club: four seats facing in pairs, often with a work table between them.
  • Mid-cabin: a conference or dining group, or a second club, depending on the aircraft.
  • Aft lounge: a divan that makes into a bed, sometimes with a separate rear compartment.
  • Galley and crew rest: usually forward, with a lavatory at the rear.

Our tiles show 14 to 16 typical passengers, with a published maximum of 19. On an overnight crossing, plan on fewer people sleeping properly than there are seats, and confirm the berth count with the operator for the specific tail. The G550 is known for its large oval windows, which make the cabin brighter than many aircraft of its generation.

Connectivity and refits

Because the fleet spans almost two decades of production, cabin equipment varies more on a G550 than on newer types. Some aircraft have been refitted with modern high-speed connectivity, new seats and upgraded entertainment; others still carry older systems. This is the single biggest difference between a good G550 charter and an average one, and we check it tail by tail.

Gulfstream G550 range in practice

Published range is measured under ideal conditions. Our screen assumes that about 85% of it is usable with a real payload, winds and reserves, and adds about 5% to great-circle distances for routing. For a 6,750 nm aircraft, that gives a practical reach of roughly 5,740 nm. Our private jet range guide explains the method for every type.

Nonstop on our corridor list

On that screen, the fact pack for this page lists 103 corridors that the G550 flies nonstop, all of them screening estimates rather than flight plans. Highlights:

  • North Atlantic: London to New York, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Miami; Paris, Madrid, Geneva and Nice to New York.
  • Europe to the Americas' far side: London to Los Angeles, London and Geneva to Aspen, and New York to São Paulo.
  • Europe and the Gulf: London, Paris, Geneva, Milan, Madrid, Rome and Zurich to Dubai; Riyadh to London.
  • Asia-Pacific: Hong Kong to Sydney, Tokyo to Singapore and Dubai to Singapore.

The corridor that falls outside is New York to Dubai, at about 5,950 nm great circle in our data. With routing, it lands between the G550's practical and published range, so our screen calls it marginal. On the day, an operator might make it nonstop with a light cabin and kind winds, or plan a fuel stop. If that route is your trip, compare the Bombardier Global 7500 or the Gulfstream G700, both of which clear it on our screen.

Short sectors

The list also includes short hops such as Boston to New York and Milan to Rome. A G550 flies them easily, but on short sectors you pay large-cabin rates for comfort you hardly use. Unless the aircraft is already in position or the hop is part of a longer trip, a smaller jet is usually better value.

Why choose a G550 over a newer jet

The case for a Gulfstream G550 charter is value. It does most of what the ultra-long-range class does:

  • It crosses the Atlantic nonstop in both directions with a full cabin on most days.
  • It links Europe with the Gulf and the US East Coast with the Caribbean.
  • It offers a stand-up cabin with room to sleep.

What you give up, compared with a G650 or a Global, is some cabin width, a little speed and the latest cabin technology. For many trips that trade is worth making, particularly when a well-refitted G550 is positioned close to your departure airport and a newer aircraft would have to fly in from elsewhere.

When to step up instead

  • Very long sectors or strong seasonal headwinds, where extra range protects the nonstop plan.
  • Larger groups who want to sleep, where a longer cabin with more berths helps.
  • Clients who want the newest interior and cabin systems as part of the experience.

In those cases we compare the Gulfstream G650 and the Bombardier Global 6500 first.

G550 private jet charter at the airport

Range only helps if the aircraft can use the airports on your trip. A G550 is a large jet, and a few practical points shape where it goes:

  • Business aviation airports. On our corridors the primary airports are typically dedicated business aviation fields such as Farnborough for London and Teterboro for New York, all of which handle large-cabin Gulfstreams every day.
  • Hot, high and heavy. At high-altitude or hot airports, a fully fuelled G550 needs more runway. The operator may carry less fuel on departure and plan a stop, which is why a ski or desert trip is always checked against the specific airport and season.
  • Size and noise rules. Some airports restrict large aircraft by wingspan, weight or noise category, and the rules change. We confirm the current position for your date before offering an aircraft.
  • Customs and slots. International arrivals need a customs-capable airport, and busy airports may require slots. The operator arranges these, and we build the timing around them.

Who a Gulfstream G550 charter suits

The G550 suits travellers who need long range and a real cabin but do not need the latest aircraft to enjoy the trip:

  • Business teams on transatlantic trips who want to work on the way out and sleep on the way back.
  • Families heading to the Caribbean, the Gulf or the US West Coast with plenty of luggage.
  • Organisations with a budget ceiling who still need a nonstop crossing.
  • Travellers with flexible dates who can take advantage of a well-positioned aircraft or an empty leg.

It is less suited to very short hops, to airports with tight size limits, and to clients who want the newest interior as part of the experience.

Gulfstream G550 charter cost

The cost section above shows the hourly band our pricing model uses for the ultra-long-range category, where our dataset places the G550: about USD 12,500 to 17,500 per flight hour. The band follows published market rates, but it is an estimate, not a quote. In the real market, an older, fully depreciated type such as the G550 is often offered below the newest aircraft in the class, which is part of its appeal, but the gap depends on the aircraft, the operator and the date.

As a purely illustrative calculation, a seven-hour transatlantic sector at the model's band would come to roughly USD 87,500 to 122,500 for the flying alone. A real quote also includes:

  • Positioning to your departure airport and home afterwards, which our model captures with a factor on one-way trips.
  • Crew costs, including a relief pilot on the longest flights and hotels on overnights.
  • Airport, handling and navigation charges at both ends.
  • Catering and connectivity at cost.
  • Waiting days if the aircraft stays with you.

Our private jet cost guide explains each driver. When you are ready, request a G550 quote through JetPriceCheck and we will ask operators for firm prices on specific aircraft.

Empty legs on long-range jets

Because many G550 trips are one way, the aircraft often flies home empty. Those repositioning flights are sometimes sold as empty legs, which can be excellent value if your dates are flexible. The trade-off is that the schedule belongs to the original client. See our empty-leg flights page for how they work.

How the G550 compares with its peers

Aircraft How it differs from a G550 for a charter client
Gulfstream G650 Wider, taller cabin and more range; usually a higher rate.
Bombardier Global 6500 Newer, wide cabin with similar range; still in production.
Dassault Falcon 8X Three-engine jet, strong at demanding airports; slightly smaller cabin cross-section.
Bombardier Global 7500 Much more range and a four-zone cabin; aimed at the longest sectors.
Gulfstream G700 Gulfstream's current flagship; the newest cabin, at a premium.

If you are flexible across the ultra-long-range jet category, tell us: it often turns up a better-positioned aircraft and a better price. Our aircraft guide covers every class.

Choosing a good G550 tail

With a type that spans nearly twenty years of deliveries, we ask operators these questions before we show you an aircraft:

  1. Year of manufacture and last refit, which tell you most about the cabin you will sit in.
  2. Connectivity, and whether it works over the oceans on your route.
  3. Layout and berths, including whether there is a separate aft compartment.
  4. Operator and certificate, confirming the aircraft is operated commercially under a valid air operator certificate.
  5. Crew plan, including a cabin attendant and, where needed, a relief pilot.
  6. Base, because positioning is often the biggest variable in the price.

Our directory of private jet routes shows the airports we typically use on each corridor, which helps when comparing where each aircraft is based.

Frequently asked questions about Gulfstream G550 charter

How far can a Gulfstream G550 fly nonstop?

The widely published figure is about 6,750 nm. On our practical screen it flies 103 of the corridors we list nonstop, from London to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Sydney; New York to Dubai is marginal.

Is the G550 still being built?

No. Production ended around 2021, but a large fleet remains in service and available for charter.

How many passengers fit on a G550 charter?

Typically 14 to 16 in our data. For overnight flights, plan on fewer so that more passengers can sleep flat.

G550 or G650?

Both cross the Atlantic nonstop. The G650 has a wider cabin and more range; the G550 is often the better-value option when a well-refitted aircraft is nearby.

What does a G550 cost per hour to charter?

Our pricing model, built on published market rates, uses USD 12,500 to 17,500 per flight hour for the category. Real quotes vary by aircraft, operator and trip, so use the band only for a sense of scale.

A well-chosen Gulfstream G550 charter delivers most of the long-range experience at a more measured cost. Tell us where you are going and who is travelling, and we will return with specific aircraft, their years and layouts, and a firm operator quote.
