Private jet charter Los Angeles: where your trip begins
Private jet charter Los Angeles trips start in one of the busiest private aviation markets on earth. The city sends aircraft north to the Bay Area, east to Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and Aspen, south to Cabo San Lucas, across the continent to New York and Miami, and across the Atlantic to London. This guide is about flying out of Los Angeles: which airport to leave from, which aircraft suits each kind of trip, what the airport rules mean for your departure time, and how to read the estimates shown in the tables above.
The tables above list our Los Angeles airports, every route we cover with its distance and lowest estimate, and any empty legs departing. This guide adds the context: the traffic on the 405, the curfew at Van Nuys, aircraft trade-offs on long trips, and the questions to ask before you confirm.
We are a charter broker, not an airline or an operator. We don't own or operate aircraft. We source your flight from licensed operators, compare the options available for your date, and look after the trip until you land. You can read more about how we work on the JetPriceCheck homepage.
Why Los Angeles is a private aviation city
Los Angeles is spread out and its traffic is bad. A trip across the metro area can take ninety minutes at rush hour. For many travellers the problem isn't the flight but reaching the airport and getting through a huge commercial terminal.
Chartering solves that in three ways. You choose a departure airport that suits where you live or work. You arrive shortly before departure and board from a private terminal. And you set your own departure time, within the airport's operating rules, so a morning of meetings in Century City doesn't have to be cut short for a scheduled flight.
The travellers vary. Entertainment companies move talent and crews to shoots and premieres. Technology and finance teams shuttle to the Bay Area. Families head to Cabo, Aspen or Vancouver, and event travellers fill the Las Vegas corridor on fight nights and race weekends. Each group needs something different from the flight.
Airports for private jet charter in Los Angeles
The airport table above lists the two airports in our Los Angeles dataset: Van Nuys, which is dedicated to business and general aviation, and Los Angeles International, the region's commercial hub. They suit quite different departures.
Van Nuys (VNY): the default for private flights
Van Nuys sits in the San Fernando Valley, north of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is owned and run by Los Angeles World Airports, the City of Los Angeles department that also runs LAX. According to Wikipedia's Van Nuys Airport entry, it is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, with more than 330,000 operations reported for 2024. Most private jets based in or visiting Los Angeles use it, so the choice of aircraft and crews positioned there is wide.
Van Nuys suits people in the Valley, Calabasas, the Hollywood Hills, Bel Air and Beverly Hills, and anyone heading north or east. It is less convenient from Orange County or the South Bay. Leave extra time on weekday afternoons, when the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass is congested.
Van Nuys also has an on-site U.S. Customs facility. LAWA announced in 2015 that a dedicated clearance facility had opened under the federal User Fee Airport Program. That matters for return flights from Cabo San Lucas, Vancouver or London, which need customs clearance at the first US landing. Clearance still has to be requested in advance and is subject to CBP staffing, so we confirm it with the operator for each international arrival.
Los Angeles International (LAX)
LAX is one of the largest passenger airports in the United States and is built around airline traffic. It makes sense for a private departure when you are connecting with an airline passenger, are already near the South Bay, or have a large-cabin jet positioned there for a long-haul trip. For most domestic flights Van Nuys is quicker to reach and to move through. Handling and parking at LAX can also add cost, which appears in the operator's quote rather than in our estimates.
Other airfields around the basin
Burbank, Long Beach and Santa Monica also handle business aircraft but are not yet in our dataset. If one is much closer to your address, tell us when you ask for a quote and we'll check whether a suitable aircraft can use it and which local rules apply.
Noise rules and departure times at Van Nuys
Van Nuys is surrounded by neighbourhoods, and the City of Los Angeles has regulated aircraft noise there for decades. The airport's noise restrictions page describes a partial curfew. Older, louder jets certified as Stage 2 may not depart between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., and quieter Stage 3 and newer aircraft face tighter rules later at night.
Most modern charter aircraft meet current noise standards, so the rules affect a small share of older airframes. They still shape planning. For a very late departure, or a very early one to reach the East Coast by lunchtime, the aircraft must be allowed to depart at that hour. We check this before we present an option, and it is a reason to be wary of a cheap quote on an older jet for an overnight departure.
Routes we cover from Los Angeles
The routes table above lists fifteen corridors from Los Angeles, sorted by distance. It is easier to plan if you think of them in four groups.
California and the short hops
The shortest sectors in our dataset are to San Diego at about 110 nautical miles, San Francisco at about 253 nm, and Oakland and San Jose at a similar distance. These trips are dominated by time on the ground. The flight itself is short, so the value comes from missing freeway traffic and commercial security lines, and from being able to fly out and back in one day. A light jet or a turboprop is usually enough, and our data lists the light jet as the smallest category that flies every one of these sectors nonstop.
Our dataset also lists San Jose to Los Angeles among the busier private jet corridors. The pereJets study of the busiest private jet routes counts about 1,323 observed movements between the two cities. That third-party figure is not verified by us, but it shows how much traffic moves between Silicon Valley and Southern California.
Desert, mountain and the Southwest
The Las Vegas corridor, at about 199 nm, is the busiest in our Los Angeles data. The same pereJets study records about 1,763 movements between the two cities. That is also a third-party, unverified count, but no other route from LA in our list comes close. Demand peaks around conventions, fights, concerts and race weekends, and those are the weeks to book early. The Los Angeles to Las Vegas route guide covers the choice of arrival airports and event weeks in detail.
Phoenix at about 326 nm and Denver at about 729 nm are business and family corridors, and a light jet flies both nonstop. Aspen at about 634 nm is different. Aspen's mountain airport has performance limits and a wingspan limit that restrict which aircraft can land there. Choose the aircraft to suit the destination airport rather than the distance, especially in the ski season.
Pacific Coast and international leisure
Seattle at about 818 nm and Vancouver at about 923 nm run up the coast. Cabo San Lucas at about 808 nm is the main leisure corridor to Mexico. All three are within light-jet range on paper, but on the longer sectors many groups step up to a midsize jet for more cabin space and baggage room. Vancouver and Cabo are international trips. Passports, Canadian or Mexican entry requirements and US customs on the way back all have to be arranged, and they affect which aircraft and airports make sense.
Coast to coast and transatlantic
The long corridors are where the choice of aircraft matters most. Dallas at about 1,084 nm is still flown nonstop by light jets in our data. New York at about 2,129 nm and Miami at about 2,035 nm need a midsize jet or larger to fly nonstop. A light jet on those routes usually means a fuel stop. London at about 4,718 nm is an ultra-long-range mission in our data and needs a large-cabin jet built for that distance.
On transcontinental routes, flying east usually gets a tailwind and the return west a headwind, so the jet that flies nonstop to New York may need more planning on the way back in winter. The reverse-direction guides, such as New York to Los Angeles, Miami to Los Angeles and London to Los Angeles, show the westbound picture.
Choosing the aircraft for a private jet from Los Angeles
The routes table shows the smallest category that can fly each route nonstop, which is a starting point rather than a recommendation. Four things decide the right aircraft for a Los Angeles departure: how many people are travelling, how much they are carrying, the longest leg of the trip, and the limits of the destination airport.
Light jets suit most trips within California and the Southwest, and many small-group trips to Denver, Seattle or Cabo. The trade-off is cabin height and baggage space: fine for Las Vegas, tighter for Cabo with golf bags and surfboards.
Midsize and super midsize jets add a stand-up cabin, more baggage room and nonstop range to the East Coast. Heavy and ultra-long-range jets are for large groups, overnight flights and London. Our aircraft guide explains each category, with range, cabin and baggage figures by model.
Private jet charter Los Angeles pricing: reading the estimates
Every price on this page is an estimate from our demonstration pricing model, not a quote. The "From" column shows the lowest one-way estimate for the smallest aircraft that flies each route nonstop: a guide to relative cost, not a price for your date.
The actual price of a private jet charter from Los Angeles depends mainly on:
- Aircraft category and model. Bigger cabins and longer range cost more per hour.
- Positioning. If the aircraft is not already at Van Nuys or LAX, you may pay for it to fly in empty. Los Angeles has a large based fleet, which often helps.
- Trip shape. A same-day return on a short hop can cost much less than two separate one-ways, because the aircraft and crew wait for you instead of flying home empty. Multi-day trips may add crew costs and overnight fees.
- Dates. Holiday weeks, awards season and big event weekends put pressure on availability.
- Airport and handling fees, plus taxes, which vary by airport and by domestic or international trip.
Our private jet cost guide explains the pricing model and what goes into a charter quote. When you're ready to compare real options for your dates, request a quote through JetPriceCheck and we'll come back with firm prices from licensed operators.
When to book: seasons and events in Los Angeles
Demand for private flights out of Los Angeles follows the entertainment calendar, the school calendar and the resorts. Awards season in the first quarter of the year brings heavy traffic into and out of the city. The Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year weeks fill the Aspen, Cabo and Hawaii-bound fleets early. Summer is busy for the Pacific Northwest, Vancouver and Europe. Big Las Vegas events pull aircraft away from Southern California for a weekend at a time.
Los Angeles is also due to host the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. Expect very high demand and extra airspace arrangements around them. For any peak week, book early and keep your timing flexible.
Empty legs from Los Angeles
With so many aircraft based in Los Angeles, empty legs come up often when an aircraft has to fly empty to its next job. Our empty-leg flights page lists them, and any departing the Los Angeles area show in the table above. They suit flexible travellers: the operator can change or cancel the flight if the original booking moves.

Frequently asked questions
Which airport is used for private jets in Los Angeles?
Most private flights from Los Angeles leave from Van Nuys, a busy business and general aviation airport in the San Fernando Valley. LAX is also used, mainly for connections with airline passengers or for some long-haul departures. Other airfields in the region can be checked on request.
Is there a curfew for private jets at Van Nuys?
There is a partial curfew. According to the airport's published noise rules, older Stage 2 jets may not depart between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., and quieter aircraft also face limits later at night. We check that the proposed aircraft can legally depart at your chosen time.
Can I clear customs at Van Nuys when flying back to Los Angeles?
Van Nuys has a dedicated US Customs facility under the federal user-fee program, so international returns can often clear there. Clearance must be requested in advance and depends on CBP availability, so we confirm it with the operator for each trip.
What size of jet do I need from Los Angeles to New York?
In our data, a midsize jet is the smallest category that flies Los Angeles to New York nonstop. Smaller jets usually need a fuel stop. Westbound return flights face headwinds, so we plan both legs.
How far in advance should I book a private jet from Los Angeles?
A few days is often enough on ordinary dates. For holiday weeks, awards season and major Las Vegas events, book several weeks ahead.
