Route overview
- At about 2,828 nm, this trip is beyond the typical nonstop range of light jets and midsize jets. Super Midsize Jets are the smallest category that can usually fly it without a fuel stop.
- There are 8 airport combinations for this trip. Choosing between them changes the flying distance by up to 34 nm, so ground transfer time often matters more than the airport choice.
- London City Airport has a runway of about 4,948 ft, which limits the aircraft that can use it.

Private jet London to Boston: the shorter way across the Atlantic
A private jet London to Boston flight is the shortest of the London to US corridors we cover. Our figures put the great-circle distance at 2,828 nautical miles, slightly less than London to New York, and our model shows a super midsize jet crossing it nonstop in about 6 hours 55 minutes. That makes Boston a natural fit for the aircraft that many European and American operators already fly across the ocean, rather than a route that needs the largest long-range jets.
Boston's pull for travellers from London is distinctive, too. The city and its neighbours, Cambridge in particular, are home to universities, hospitals, biotech and life-science companies, and investment firms, and a lot of the traffic on this corridor is people who move between those worlds and London's: founders and investors, academics, clinicians, and families visiting students. Leisure trips to New England, from autumn colour to summer on the coast, fill in around them.
The data sections above give you the categories, flight times, airports and estimate ranges. This guide interprets them and adds the planning detail: which airport to land at, how customs fits your arrival time, and how to use the five-hour time difference. We are a charter broker; we do not own or operate aircraft. We source aircraft from licensed operators and look after the trip for you. Read more about how we work on the JetPriceCheck home page.
Choosing the aircraft for a London to Boston charter
Super midsize: the smallest nonstop category
Our route data identifies the super midsize jet as the smallest category with a nonstop fit on this route. It carries eight or nine passengers in our data and is quoted at about 6 hours 55 minutes. For a small team, a family or a principal travelling with staff, that is usually the sensible starting point: a stand-up cabin, a proper galley and enough range for the crossing with normal baggage.
The right-sized list for this corridor includes the Cessna Citation Longitude, the Gulfstream G280, the Embraer Legacy 650E, the Bombardier Challenger 650, the Dassault Falcon 2000LXS and the Embraer Praetor 600. They differ in cabin width, baggage volume and how the seats convert for sleep, so the right one depends on your group rather than on the route. Even with a nonstop category, the operator checks each aircraft against your passenger load and the forecast winds before confirming a nonstop plan, because the westbound crossing usually flies into the prevailing westerlies.
Heavy and ultra long range jets: more room, similar time
Heavy jets, with 10 to 14 seats in our data, are quoted at about 6 hours 50 minutes, and ultra long range jets, with 12 to 17 seats, at about 6 hours 35 minutes. A Gulfstream G450 or similar heavy jet gives a larger group more cabin and baggage room and a separate rear area. On a seven-hour flight, you step up because of your group size or because you want to sleep properly on the overnight return, not to save time.
Light and midsize jets: why they still stop
Light and midsize jets carry a fuel-stop fit, with modelled flying times of about 7 hours 35 minutes and 7 hours 15 minutes. Those figures look close to the nonstop options, but they leave out the time spent on the ground at the stop, plus a second approach and departure in North Atlantic weather. For most people, the stop costs more of the day than the smaller aircraft saves in money. Turboprops and VIP airliners carry an "unknown" range fit: turboprops are not practical for passengers on this crossing, and VIP airliners are for large groups and are arranged case by case. Our aircraft guide compares all categories.
London to Boston private jet cost: reading the estimates
The ranges on our model
All prices on this page come from our pricing model, which uses published market rates, in US dollars. They are estimates, not quotes and not offers. Only a licensed operator can give a firm price for a specific aircraft on specific dates.
For the nonstop categories, the model shows:
- Super midsize jet: about $66,000 to $94,000 one way, or $83,000 to $117,000 return.
- Heavy jet: about $93,000 to $142,000 one way, or $116,000 to $177,000 return.
- Ultra long range jet: about $132,000 to $185,000 one way, or $166,000 to $232,000 return.
Midsize and light jet estimates start lower, but they include a stop, so compare them on the full day, not only on price.
Why the return costs less than twice the one-way
A one-way charter usually has to cover the aircraft flying home empty. When you fly back on the same aircraft within a short period, that sector is used, which is why our return estimates are well below double the one-way. For short business trips of a few days, pricing the return together is usually the better value. For long stays, two separate one-ways can work out better than paying for the aircraft and crew to wait.
What moves the price
- Where the aircraft is based. A super midsize already in London is cheaper to put on your departure than one that has to position from elsewhere.
- Waiting and crew. A same-week return keeps the crew away from base, with hotels and waiting fees.
- Dates. University commencement weeks, holidays and the autumn leaf season can all increase demand for aircraft and hotels in and around Boston.
- Airports and timing. Handling fees differ between Hanscom and Logan, and Massport charges a night field-use fee at Hanscom, covered below.

Farnborough to Hanscom: the airports at each end
London departures
Our data lists four London airports for this route, with Farnborough and Luton as the typical choices. Farnborough Airport is a dedicated business aviation airport with no airline service, well placed for west London and the Thames Valley. It operates under an annual movement cap that Aviation International News has reported it has applied to raise, so busy weeks need early booking. London Luton Airport suits north London and the Midlands, and London Biggin Hill the south-east. London City Airport is closest to the City, but only aircraft approved for its steep approach can use it, and few transatlantic jets qualify. Our comparison of London's private jet airports sets out the options.
Hanscom Field: Boston's business aviation airport
On the Boston side, our data uses Laurence G. Hanscom Field in Bedford. It is operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority and lies about 14 miles from Boston, between Concord and Lexington, according to Massport and Wikipedia. It is the largest general aviation airport in New England and serves as the corporate reliever for Logan. Its main runway is about 7,011 feet long, which comfortably handles the super midsize and heavy jets that suit this route.
Hanscom's location is its main advantage. For Cambridge, the Route 128 technology belt, Lexington, Concord and the western suburbs, it usually means a shorter drive than Logan and a quiet private terminal at the end of a long flight. Massport applies a night field-use fee between 11 pm and 7 am, set out on its operating fees page, so late arrivals and departures are planned with that in mind.
When Logan makes more sense
Boston Logan International is the region's airline hub, close to downtown, the Financial District and the Seaport. Private flights use it through the FBO on the field, and it can save time if you are staying in the city centre. It is also a busy airline airport, so we compare it with Hanscom on door-to-door time and on how the customs arrival works for your date.
Customs on arrival
US Customs and Border Protection processes international private flights only at designated airports and at set hours, as CBP's general aviation airports page explains. The first US landing therefore has to be at an airport where CBP can clear the aircraft at your arrival time. The operator confirms which Boston-area airport can do that on your date and books the arrival; if the preferred field cannot, the plan changes before you fly, not after. The operator also files the passenger manifest through eAPIS, which federal rules require no later than 60 minutes before departure.
Documents for the US and the UK
The entry rules are the same as on an airline. If anyone is travelling on an ESTA rather than a visa, the operator must be a Visa Waiver Program signatory carrier; CBP publishes the list of signatory carriers, and we check it before quoting. On the eastbound return, visitors who are not British or Irish citizens may need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation; the Home Office ETA factsheet explains who needs one.
Timing: the five-hour clock and the overnight return
Boston is normally five hours behind London. For a few weeks in March and around the end of October, when the UK and US change clocks on different dates, the gap is four hours; NewYork.co.uk lists the dates, which apply to Boston as well.
Westbound, the clock is generous. On our super midsize time of about 6 hours 55 minutes, a 09:00 departure from Farnborough lands at around 11:00 local time in Boston. That is early enough for a lunch meeting in Cambridge or an afternoon at a lab or campus.
Eastbound, the prevailing winds usually help, so the return is often quicker than our westbound model. The classic plan is an evening departure from Hanscom, a few hours of sleep and a morning arrival in London. Leave before 11 pm to stay outside Hanscom's night-fee window, and choose a cabin that lets you lie flat if the return is overnight; that is often the best reason to step up to a heavy jet on this route.
Onward from Boston
Boston is often one stop on a longer trip. Our Boston to New York page covers the short hop to Manhattan, and a trip that starts or ends in New York can pair with our London to New York corridor. Summer travellers heading to the islands and coast of New England can often use a smaller local aircraft for the last leg, rather than keeping the transatlantic jet. Tell us the whole itinerary and we will price the legs together.
Empty legs between London and Boston
One-way charters on this route leave aircraft needing to reposition, and an operator may sell one of those empty sectors at a reduced price. The catch is that the date and time follow the original client's plans, which can change. Empty legs suit travellers who can move by a day or two, or who need only one direction. See our current empty-leg listings and tell us your window.
How we arrange your London to Boston charter
- We take the brief: passengers, bags, dates, where you are staying and any ESTA travellers.
- We shortlist aircraft: super midsize jets that fly nonstop with your load, or larger cabins for bigger groups and overnight returns.
- We pair the airports: Farnborough, Luton or Biggin Hill with Hanscom or Logan, by door-to-door time and customs hours.
- We present options side by side: aircraft, operator, flight time and full quoted price, then coordinate customs, catering and cars.
