Leaving Los Angeles: Van Nuys or LAX

Van Nuys (VNY)

Van Nuys Airport is our typical departure point and one of the busiest general-aviation airports in the world, according to its Wikipedia entry. It is run by Los Angeles World Airports, has no scheduled airline service and offers two parallel runways, the longer of about 8,000 feet, as NBAA's airport profile notes. A cluster of FBOs line the field, so you drive to the private terminal, hand over your bags and board within minutes.

Van Nuys is also a noise-sensitive airport in the middle of a residential valley. Its noise rules include a night-time departure curfew from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., with limited exceptions, and noise limits on the aircraft themselves. The curfew applies to departures, so it rarely affects an outbound Aspen trip, which has to leave well before then to reach Aspen before its own curfew. On a late Sunday return, the night noise limits at Van Nuys still apply to arrivals, so we check with the operator that your aircraft type can land there at the hour you expect.

LAX

Los Angeles International appears in our data because private aircraft can use it. It makes sense mainly when someone in your group is arriving on an international airline flight and connecting straight onto the charter, or when you are coming from the Westside and the traffic over the Sepulveda Pass is especially bad. A demanding airport, even on a short flight

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport sits at about 7,820 feet with a single runway of roughly 8,000 feet in a narrow valley. The instrument approach is one of the most demanding in the country, and operators require crews with specific training and recent experience. A two-hour flight does not make the arrival any easier, so we put forward only operators whose crews are qualified for Aspen, and we check that before you commit.

Why a short sector helps with altitude

At high elevation, thin air lengthens the take-off run and, on warm days, limits how much weight an aircraft can carry out of Aspen. On a long flight back to the east coast, that can force a choice between fuel and passengers. On a 634 nm hop to Los Angeles, the aircraft needs far less fuel, so there is usually more room for people and bags. It is one of the quiet advantages of this corridor: summer afternoon departures that would be tight on a coast-to-coast flight are often comfortable here. Curfew and wingspan

The airport's curfew page sets closing hours of 23:00 to 07:00 local time, and no departures are allowed after 22:30. Aspen is one hour ahead of Los Angeles, so an evening take-off from Van Nuys lands later on the local clock than you might expect. Pitkin County also limits wingspan to 95 feet, which rules out VIP airliners and some of the largest long-range jets. The 2027 Aspen runway closure

Pitkin County has announced that Aspen/Pitkin County Airport will close from 4 April 2027 at 11 p.m. until 19 November 2027 at 7 p.m. for a complete reconstruction of the runway. No airline or private flights will operate during that period.

For Los Angeles travellers, spring 2027 is the last Aspen window before the closure. Summer 2027 trips will land at Eagle County or Rifle and continue by road, and those airports are likely to be busy. If you are planning a summer in the valley next year, tell us early and we will build the trip around the alternates. We will recheck the dates before you travel, because construction schedules can move.

Weather days: Eagle County and Rifle

Snow, low cloud and gusty winds can close Aspen for hours, so every flight plan includes an alternate. The usual choices are Eagle County Regional Airport, roughly 68 miles from Aspen, and Rifle Garfield County Airport, about 61 miles away. Both sit lower and have longer runways. We agree the alternate before departure and arrange for a car to meet you there if the flight diverts.

What moves the price on this corridor

• Positioning. Many suitable aircraft are based in Southern California, which helps outbound, but one-way trips out of Aspen may pay for an empty sector.
• Peak weekends. The holidays and big ski weekends tighten the supply of Aspen-qualified crews and parking.
• Parking. When the Aspen ramp is full, an aircraft may drop you off and reposition, then return to collect you.
• Winter operations. De-icing, weather diversions and extra ground transfers add cost.
