In those weeks, ramp space at the airport fills up, arrival and departure times are in heavy demand, and aircraft availability across the United States tightens. Winter also brings weather. Snowstorms can close the airport for hours or longer, and de-icing adds time to every departure. Build a margin into any winter itinerary, particularly if you have a connection or a meeting at the other end.

Summer, June to August

Aspen's summer is busier than many visitors expect. Hiking, cycling, fly-fishing and a full calendar of cultural events, including a well-known food and wine weekend in June and ideas and music festivals through the summer, draw a large crowd. Summer brings its own operational challenge: heat at altitude. On a warm afternoon the air is thin, aircraft performance falls, and some jets may need to carry fewer passengers or less fuel to depart safely. Morning departures are often the easier option.

Off season, April, May and September to November

Between the seasons, Aspen quietens down. Some restaurants and hotels close for a few weeks, but autumn colours in September and early October attract visitors, and the airport is much easier to use. For property visits, a quiet escape or a first look at the valley, these months are the calmest.

Arriving at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, historically called Sardy Field, is the only airport in the valley and the one every private arrival aims for. What the mountain setting means for you

The airport's high-altitude safety guidance sets out why operations here need care. In practice, three things affect your trip:

• Aircraft performance. Thin air and, in summer, heat reduce what an aircraft can lift. The operator checks each flight against the conditions on the day, and on the most demanding days may limit passengers, baggage or fuel.
• Crew experience. Approaches into the valley are demanding, and operators assign crews who are familiar with them. That is one reason some aircraft are not offered for Aspen at all.
• Size limits. Pitkin County has applied a wingspan limit of 95 ft at the airport. Some of the largest long-range business jets exceed it, which matters for trips from Europe. Confirm the current rules with the operator before you choose an aircraft.

Operating hours

The airport applies an overnight curfew, described on the airport's curfew page, with no normal operations late at night and early in the morning. Drive times from either can be much longer in winter weather.
