Van Nuys Airport is the usual Los Angeles departure point for this route. It is owned by Los Angeles World Airports and is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, according to its Wikipedia entry, with private terminals operated by several FBOs and no airline traffic. It suits clients from the San Fernando Valley, Beverly Hills, Bel Air and the Westside. Van Nuys has a noise and curfew ordinance. Its noise restrictions page explains that the noisiest Stage 2 aircraft may not depart between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.; modern charter jets meet quieter standards, but late departures and arrivals are still checked with the operator.

Arriving at Phoenix Sky Harbor

Phoenix Sky Harbor is the main airport for the city, close to downtown Phoenix, Tempe and the business districts along the Camelback corridor. It has three runways, and private flights use FBOs on the airfield rather than the airline terminals. One of them, Cutter Aviation, describes itself as the oldest continually family-owned FBO in the United States, founded in 1928. For meetings in downtown Phoenix, Tempe or at Arizona State University, Sky Harbor is usually the quickest arrival.

Arriving at Scottsdale Airport

Scottsdale Airport is owned by the City of Scottsdale and focuses on general and business aviation, with no scheduled airline service. Its single runway, 03/21, is about 8,249 feet long, enough for the business jets in our table. It sits in north Scottsdale, close to the resorts, private golf communities, Paradise Valley and the Scottsdale Airpark business district.

Flying in the desert heat: what summer changes

Phoenix summers are famously hot, and the heat affects aircraft as well as people. Hot air is less dense, which means less lift under the wings and less air for the engines. In a 2017 CNBC report on heat-related airline cancellations at Sky Harbor, a temperature of 117°F was described as making the airport "feel" like it sits at about 5,300 feet rather than about 1,100 feet, and some regional jets were grounded because they had reached their certified temperature limits.

For a private jet Los Angeles to Phoenix flight, the practical consequences are modest but real:

• Departure times. On the hottest days, operators may prefer early-morning or evening departures from Phoenix, when temperatures and aircraft performance are more favourable.
• Payload. On a very hot afternoon, a heavily loaded aircraft may need to limit fuel, passengers or baggage. On a short sector this rarely matters, but it is one more reason to share your luggage list early.
• Runway choice. Longer runways help. Sky Harbor's runways and Scottsdale's 8,249 feet are generous for business jets, but the operator still runs the performance numbers for the day.
