Private jet Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas: the route at a glance
A private jet Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas flight takes you from the San Fernando Valley to the tip of the Baja California peninsula in about two and a half hours. Our figures put the great-circle distance at 808 nautical miles, and a light jet flies it nonstop in about 2 hours 30 minutes, with larger jets a few minutes quicker. It is one of the most popular international leisure routes out of Southern California, and it is short enough for a long weekend.
Because the flight crosses a border, the details that make it smooth are not the same as on a domestic hop. Which Los Angeles airport you leave from, which Cabo airport you land at, how the operator handles Mexican entry and, above all, how you come back into the United States all shape the day. The data sections above this guide show the flight times, the airports, the right-sized aircraft and our estimate ranges. This guide explains how to use them.

Why fly private from LA to Cabo
Scheduled flights between Los Angeles and Los Cabos are frequent, so people who book a private jet Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas charter tend to be solving specific problems rather than simply looking for a seat.
- Time at LAX. Getting to and through LAX at a busy hour can take longer than the flight. A private departure from Van Nuys usually means arriving shortly before take-off.
- Groups and families. A private cabin moves a family, a golf foursome or a wedding party together, with luggage, clubs and fishing gear, on a timetable the group sets.
- Arrival experience. Commercial arrivals at Los Cabos can mean long lines at immigration in peak season. Private flights are handled at a separate general aviation terminal.
- Short stays. For a three-day weekend, saving several hours at each end makes a real difference to time at the resort.
Van Nuys or LAX: where your flight departs
Our data lists Van Nuys Airport (VNY) as the typical departure airport, with Los Angeles International (LAX) as an alternative.
Van Nuys is owned by Los Angeles World Airports, the same city agency that runs LAX, and is widely described as the world's busiest general aviation airport, according to Wikipedia. It has no scheduled airline service, which is exactly what makes it convenient: a cluster of FBOs, short walks to the aircraft and easy access from the Valley, the Westside via the 405, and the Santa Monica Mountains. Our Van Nuys airport guide covers the practical details.
Van Nuys has noise rules that affect late departures. According to the airport's noise restrictions page, departures are prohibited between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., apart from exempt government and emergency flights, and only quieter Stage 3 aircraft may depart between 10 and 11 p.m. If you want to leave after work and arrive in Cabo late at night, we check the timing against those rules before confirming.
LAX makes sense in fewer cases: if you are connecting from an international airline flight, or staying near the airport. For most clients on this route, Van Nuys is the simpler choice. If you live closer to other airports in the region, see our overview of private jet airports around Los Angeles.
Arriving in Los Cabos: SJD or Cabo San Lucas
Los Cabos International (SJD)
Our route data uses Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) as the arrival airport. It is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, which also runs the airport's FBO terminal for private flights, and its single runway is about 3,000 metres long according to Wikipedia. That length means every jet category in our table can use it comfortably.
SJD sits north of San José del Cabo. That makes it close to the resorts of San José and the eastern end of the Tourist Corridor, and further from Cabo San Lucas itself, which is at the western end.
Cabo San Lucas International (CSL)
There is a second option. Cabo San Lucas International Airport is a smaller airport about 7 km north-west of Cabo San Lucas, with a runway of about 2,400 metres, and roughly 32 km from SJD. For villas and resorts on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas it can shorten the drive. Whether it works depends on the aircraft, the operator's permissions and the airport's services on your date, so we check it case by case. SJD remains the default because it handles every aircraft and international arrivals routinely.
Customs, immigration and Mexican permits
On arrival, passengers clear Mexican immigration and customs at the private terminal. Carry a passport valid for your stay and complete whatever tourist-entry form Mexico requires at the time of travel; the operator and its ground handler will tell you what is needed.
Behind the scenes, the operator needs authority to fly a charter into Mexico. Trip-support specialist Universal Weather reports in its guide to Mexico's 2025 charter permit changes that the Mexican civil aviation agency, AFAC, now requires charter operators to hold a validated blanket permit. For you, the practical point is that not every US aircraft on the market can legally be chartered to Cabo, and short-notice trips depend on operators that already hold the right paperwork. We only propose operators that can fly the trip legally.
The return: coming back into the United States
The return leg is where a private jet Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas itinerary needs the most planning. Private flights from Mexico must land first at a US airport where U.S. Customs and Border Protection can process them. The operator files an electronic manifest through CBP's eAPIS system, which federal rules require no later than 60 minutes before departure, and arranges the arrival with CBP. You can read more on CBP's general aviation processing page.
In practice, a Cabo to Los Angeles private jet flight often clears customs at an airport with CBP on site and then continues to Van Nuys, or flies directly to a Los Angeles-area airport that offers customs service. The operator decides, based on CBP hours and the aircraft. Allow time for it, keep passports handy, and make sure the passenger list you give us is complete and accurate.
Choosing the aircraft for a private jet to Los Cabos
The aircraft table above shows that every jet category from light to ultra-long-range flies this route nonstop. At 808 nm, the choice is about comfort, luggage and the size of the group.
Light jets: nonstop, but a longer sit
A light jet is the smallest nonstop category, at about 2 hours 30 minutes. A modern type such as the Embraer Phenom 300E suits couples and small families. Two and a half hours is a comfortable flight in a light jet, but you cannot stand up in most of them, and baggage space is finite, so golf bags and fishing rods need to be declared early.
Midsize and super midsize: the comfortable sweet spot
For many groups, a midsize jet like the Cessna Citation Latitude or a super midsize such as the Bombardier Challenger 350 is the right balance. Both give you a stand-up cabin and more baggage space. Our table shows them at about 2 hours 25 and 2 hours 20 minutes. On a leisure route where people travel with a lot of luggage, the extra hold volume is often the deciding factor.
Heavy jets and larger groups
Groups of ten or more look at heavy jets such as the Embraer Legacy 650E or the Bombardier Challenger 650, at about 2 hours 20 minutes. VIP airliners are arranged case by case for very large parties.
Turboprops: check the route
Turboprops appear in our table at about 3 hours 25 minutes, but our data does not confirm a nonstop range fit for this category. Depending on the type, the load and the winds, a stop may be needed, and a stop on an international trip adds a customs consideration. We check the specific aircraft before offering one. Our aircraft guide compares the categories.
Private jet to Cabo cost: reading the estimates
The price table above shows estimate ranges from our demonstration pricing model, in US dollars. They are not quotes or offers; only a licensed operator can give a firm price for a specific aircraft and date.
On our model, a one-way light jet for a private jet Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas trip sits at an estimated USD 16,000–24,000, a midsize jet at USD 19,500–29,000, a super midsize at USD 24,000–35,500 and a heavy jet at USD 29,500–44,500. Our private jet cost guide explains how these ranges are built.
What drives the price
- Aircraft category, as the table shows.
- Positioning. Los Angeles has a large charter fleet, which helps on the outbound leg. A one-way trip usually pays for the aircraft to fly home empty.
- International costs. Mexican landing, handling and permit costs, and US customs arrangements on the return.
- Waiting time. If the aircraft stays in Cabo, crew hotels and parking are added.
- Peak dates. Winter holidays and long weekends are the busiest periods.
One-way versus return
Our model shows a return well below double the one-way figure. For a light jet the estimated return range is USD 20,000–30,000, against USD 16,000–24,000 one way. For a short stay, pricing the round trip together usually makes sense. For a longer stay, two one-way trips let the aircraft leave in between; we will compare both.
When you want a firm figure, request a quote through JetPriceCheck and we will check availability with operators that hold the right Mexico authority.
When to fly: seasons and hurricane risk
Los Cabos is a year-round destination, but demand peaks in the winter months and around US holidays, when Californians head south for the sun. Spring is popular too. Book early for holiday weeks.
The other side of the calendar is weather. The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from mid-May to the end of November. Most years pass without disruption, but the risk is real: Hurricane Odile made landfall near Cabo San Lucas in September 2014, and the National Hurricane Center's report records severe damage in the area, including at the airports. For late-summer and autumn trips, ask about the operator's policy if a storm threatens, and keep your plans flexible.
Empty legs between Los Angeles and Cabo
Because so many trips are one-way in each direction, this corridor produces empty legs. An aircraft that drops a group in Cabo on Friday may be available to fly back to Los Angeles empty, and vice versa at the end of a holiday week. Empty legs are cheaper, but the time and aircraft are fixed and the flight can be cancelled if the original client changes plans. The empty legs section above shows current listings, and our empty-leg flights page explains how they work.
