Los Cabos airports for private flights

Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). Los Cabos International Airport is the region's main airport, just north of San José del Cabo. It is a mixed airport: a heavy schedule of airline flights from the US and Canada, plus a separate private aviation area where private passengers clear immigration and customs away from the airline terminals. Most charters to Cabo use SJD. From the airport, San José del Cabo is close, while Cabo San Lucas is at the other end of the Tourist Corridor, typically 45 minutes to an hour by road depending on traffic and where your hotel or villa is.

Cabo San Lucas International Airport. Closer to Cabo San Lucas itself, the smaller Cabo San Lucas International Airport is used by private aircraft and can shorten the drive for villas on the Pacific side. It is not in our airport data yet, and its services and suitability vary by aircraft type, so we check it case by case with the operator.

Cabo routes: Los Angeles and Miami

Two Cabo corridors are on our curated list.

Los Angeles (808 nm). Los Angeles to Cabo is the defining Cabo route, flown every weekend by Southern California families, second-home owners and entertainment industry travellers. Our pricing model rates it at about 3 h 25 min for a turboprop, the smallest category that can fly it nonstop, with a one-way estimate of $11,000 to $19,000. These figures are estimates, not quotes. Miami (1,613 nm). Miami to Cabo crosses the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican mainland. In our model, a light jet is the smallest category that can fly it nonstop. On a sector this long, operators check winds, payload and fuel reserves carefully, and a larger jet is often the more comfortable choice for a family or group. Notice how the flight time to Atlanta is shorter than to San Francisco: past a certain distance, the smallest capable aircraft becomes a jet, which flies much faster than a turboprop. For trips over three hours, a jet often makes sense even when a turboprop could do the job.

Mexican charter rules and entry

Mexico has tightened its rules for foreign charter flights. According to Universal Aviation's summary of Mexico's charter permit changes, a foreign operator carrying paying passengers into Mexico needs a standing authorisation from the Mexican aviation authority (AFAC), single-entry charter permits are no longer issued and each flight needs prior approval.

For you, that means:

• We check the operator's Mexican authorisation before we present any aircraft. An operator without it cannot legally fly your charter to Cabo.
• Short-notice flights need more care than domestic US trips, because approvals and handling are arranged in advance. Our last-minute private jet page explains what is possible.
• Every passenger enters Mexico as an international traveller, with a valid passport and the entry requirements for their nationality. The operator and handling agent collect your details before departure.

Returning to the United States from Cabo

The return flight is an international arrival. U.S. Customs and Border Protection requires private and charter flights from abroad to send electronic passenger and crew manifests before departure and to land first at an airport where CBP can clear the flight. For Southern California, that usually means a gateway airport with customs facilities; the operator will tell you which one and whether any onward domestic leg follows. When to fly to Cabo

• Winter and spring, December to April. The peak season, with dry weather, whale watching offshore and the heaviest private traffic at Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, Presidents' Day weekend and spring break.
• Long weekends year-round. Cabo is close enough to California and Texas for three- and four-day trips, so holiday weekends fill the private aviation area even outside winter.
• Autumn fishing season. Cabo is a sport-fishing capital, and the autumn tournaments bring boats, crews and private aircraft.
• Hurricane season. The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November. Los Cabos has been hit hard by storms in the past, and late summer and early autumn carry the most risk. Follow the National Hurricane Center forecasts and keep a fallback plan.

Desert heat in summer reduces aircraft performance, especially for full aircraft on long sectors. Morning departures usually help.

• Turboprops suit shorter hops within Mexico and cost-conscious trips to Southern California, with a smaller cabin and longer flight times.
• Light jets carry four to six passengers to California, Arizona and Texas in comfort, and can reach further in our model.
• Midsize and super midsize jets are the common choice for families and groups from California, Texas and the Midwest: more baggage space, standing room and range to spare.
• Heavy and long-range jets suit the East Coast, large groups and trips from Canada or further afield.
