Choosing your airport in the Phoenix area

Scottsdale Airport (SDL)

For many people, a private jet in Arizona means Scottsdale. Scottsdale Airport is owned by the City of Scottsdale and is dedicated to business and general aviation, with no scheduled airline service. It sits in north Scottsdale, close to the resorts, golf courses and neighbourhoods of north Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Carefree. For travellers staying at the resorts or living in the north-east Valley, it is usually the most convenient choice by far.

The airport is busy in winter, especially around big events. Parking space for visiting aircraft can become tight, and some aircraft drop passengers and reposition elsewhere. We check this before confirming your trip.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX)

Phoenix Sky Harbor is the region's airline hub, close to downtown Phoenix and Tempe. Private aircraft use business aviation facilities away from the airline terminals, so passengers do not pass through the public halls. Sky Harbor suits travellers starting downtown, in Tempe or near Arizona State University, and it can be the better option for larger aircraft on long trips.

Phoenix Deer Valley and Goodyear

The City of Phoenix Aviation Department also runs two general aviation airports that the FAA designates as relievers for Sky Harbor. Deer Valley, in the north of the city, is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the region and is convenient for the north Valley. Goodyear, a former naval air station in the West Valley, suits travellers in the western suburbs. Neither has airline service. Heat, height and performance

Phoenix summers are among the hottest of any large U.S. city, and heat matters to aircraft. Hot air is thinner, which means engines produce less thrust and wings produce less lift. A notable example was reported by CNBC in 2017, when some regional airliners at Sky Harbor could not operate on the hottest afternoons because the temperature was above their published limits.

For private flights, the effect is usually more subtle. On a very hot day, an aircraft may need more runway, or may have to carry less fuel or fewer passengers. On a long trip, that can mean a fuel stop or a larger aircraft. Early-morning and evening departures are cooler and often easier. Operators calculate this for every flight; we make sure you know about any limits before you book.

One more local detail: Arizona does not observe daylight saving time (except on the Navajo Nation). For part of the year Phoenix shares its clock with California, for the rest with Colorado. Check departure and arrival times carefully when you plan a tight connection or a same-day return.

Winter is Phoenix's high season

From late autumn to spring, the Phoenix area fills with visitors escaping the cold, and private traffic rises with them.

• Golf and the WM Phoenix Open. The WM Phoenix Open, held at TPC Scottsdale early in the year, is one of the busiest weeks for private aviation in the region, and Scottsdale Airport is at the centre of it.
• Spring training. Baseball's Cactus League brings teams, staff and fans to ballparks across the Valley in late winter and early spring.
• Snowbirds and resort guests. Second-home owners and families arrive for weeks or months, often by private jet, with pets and plenty of luggage.

Phoenix's central position in the western half of the country shows in these numbers. Every trip here is within turboprop range in the model, but at five hours or more, most travellers to Chicago and Atlanta choose a jet for speed and comfort and accept the higher hourly rate. What shapes the price of a private jet charter Phoenix trip

1. Season. Winter demand, especially around the golf tournament and spring training, tightens availability and pushes up prices. Summer usually has more aircraft free.
2. Positioning. The Phoenix area has a large based fleet, but the right aircraft may still need to fly in to collect you. That time is usually part of the price.
3. Airport. Fees, parking and handling differ between Scottsdale, Sky Harbor and the relievers, and in peak weeks parking can be scarce.

Beyond the Valley: Sedona, the Grand Canyon and the mountains

Many visitors combine the Phoenix area with trips north to Sedona, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon, or to the ski areas of Colorado and Utah.
