Private jet charter New York: the busiest private aviation market to fly from
A private jet charter New York departure starts with a question most other cities never have to answer: which airport? The New York area has more private flights than almost anywhere else in the world, spread across several airports on both sides of the Hudson. The right one depends on where you are in the city, where you are going, how big the aircraft is and what time you want to leave.
This guide is about flying out of New York. The tables above list the airports in our data, the twenty corridors we publish from the city with their distances and estimated prices, and any empty legs we can see. Here we explain the airport choice, the character of each group of routes, the aircraft they need and how demand moves through the year.
JetPriceCheck is a charter broker. We do not own or operate aircraft. We ask licensed operators for availability, compare options for your date and group, and look after the booking until you land. You can read more on the JetPriceCheck homepage.
Teterboro, Westchester or JFK: choosing your departure airport
Teterboro (TEB)
Teterboro is the airport most people mean when they talk about flying private from New York. It is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and operated as a reliever airport for general aviation, with no scheduled airline service, according to the Port Authority's Teterboro page. It sits in the New Jersey Meadowlands about 12 miles from Midtown Manhattan, which makes it the natural choice for travellers based on the West Side, in Midtown or in northern New Jersey.
Teterboro has one rule that shapes aircraft choice: aircraft with an operating weight over 100,000 pounds may not use the airport, a limit described by the Port Authority and on Wikipedia. Most business jets fall below it, but some of the largest long-range aircraft and all VIP airliners do not. For those, we look at other airports. Our Teterboro airport guide covers the details.
The other thing to know is traffic. The drive from Manhattan crosses the Hudson, and at rush hour the tunnels and the George Washington Bridge can add a lot of time. We plan your pick-up around the time of day, not the distance.
Westchester County (HPN)
Westchester County Airport, north of the city near White Plains, is the other major private-jet option. It is owned by Westchester County and serves both airlines and business aviation. For travellers in Connecticut, Westchester, the Upper East Side or northern Manhattan, it can be quicker to reach than Teterboro.
Westchester asks operators to avoid flights between midnight and 6:30 a.m. under a voluntary restraint programme, as described on the airport's noise abatement page. It is voluntary rather than a curfew, but it matters for very late departures and early-morning arrivals, and we check timing with the operator. More on our Westchester airport page.
JFK
John F. Kennedy International is a major airline hub, and private flights are only a small part of its traffic. It comes into play mainly for aircraft that exceed Teterboro's weight limit, or when a traveller is connecting from an airline flight. For most private departures, Teterboro or Westchester is simpler.
Our overview of private jet airports in New York compares all three side by side.
The East Coast shuttle corridors
The shortest corridors from New York are some of the busiest private routes anywhere. The route data above includes observed-movement figures for three of them from pereJets, a third-party ADS-B tracker and charter company; these are unverified estimates, but they give a sense of scale.
- Washington, D.C. At about 193 nm, the Washington–New York corridor has the most observed movements of any New York corridor in the pereJets figures: 2,809. Travellers include lawyers, lobbyists, financiers and government-facing executives on day trips.
- Boston. The Boston–New York corridor, about 158 nm, serves finance, biotech and universities.
- Philadelphia. At only about 80 nm, New York to Philadelphia is the shortest corridor we publish from the city. It makes sense for a tight schedule when the road or rail alternative does not fit the day.
- Toronto. New York to Toronto, about 300 nm, is international but short, with 1,333 observed movements in the pereJets figures. Canadian entry rules apply at the other end.
- Chicago. New York to Chicago, about 619 nm, links the country's two biggest financial centres.
On all of these, a light jet is the smallest category that flies nonstop in our data, and it is usually the right aircraft. On sectors of well under two hours, a bigger cabin buys comfort rather than time.
Florida, the Caribbean and Mexico
New York's leisure corridors head south in winter.
- Palm Beach is the classic winter corridor. Palm Beach–New York, about 902 nm, has 1,825 observed movements in the pereJets figures, reflecting the flow of New Yorkers who spend the winter in Florida.
- Miami. New York to Miami, about 949 nm, combines business with leisure, and gets busy around events such as the art fairs in December.
- Nassau in the Bahamas, about 964 nm, and Cancún in Mexico, about 1,357 nm, are the main island and beach corridors: New York to Nassau and New York to Cancún. Both are international, so passports and destination entry rules apply.
A light jet can fly all four nonstop in our data, but on sectors of two to three hours and more, many families step up to a midsize or super midsize jet for the headroom and luggage space.
The mountains, the islands and the West
- New York to Nantucket, about 183 nm, is the summer island corridor. It is short, but Nantucket is a small airport where summer demand is high, so aircraft choice and timing both matter.
- New York to Aspen, about 1,502 nm, is the ski corridor. Aspen is a high-altitude mountain airport with its own operating limits, and not every aircraft or crew is cleared to operate there. We confirm suitability with the operator before you commit.
- New York to Los Angeles, about 2,129 nm, and New York to Las Vegas, about 1,935 nm, need at least a midsize jet in our data for a nonstop flight. Westbound, winter headwinds can make the flight noticeably longer, and your operator confirms the plan on the day.
Transatlantic and long-haul corridors
The long-range corridors are where aircraft choice becomes critical.
- London. London–New York, about 2,986 nm, needs at least a super midsize jet nonstop in our data.
- Paris and Madrid. Paris–New York, about 3,150 nm, and Madrid–New York, about 3,117 nm, also start at super midsize, but the margin is smaller, so aircraft choice depends on passengers, luggage and winds.
- Geneva and Nice. Geneva–New York, about 3,352 nm, and Nice–New York, about 3,463 nm, need a heavy jet in our data.
- São Paulo. New York to São Paulo, about 4,162 nm, is a heavy-jet overnight flight.
- Dubai. New York to Dubai, about 5,951 nm, is one of the longest corridors we publish, and only an ultra-long-range jet can fly it nonstop in our data.
Remember Teterboro's 100,000-pound limit here. Most super midsize and many heavy jets are within it, but some of the largest ultra-long-range aircraft are not, which may make Westchester or JFK the departure airport for the longest flights. Our aircraft guide compares the categories' range and cabins.
When to fly: New York's seasons
New York's private aviation market is busy all year, but the destinations shift with the seasons.
- Winter is the Florida and ski season. Palm Beach, Miami, the Caribbean and Aspen are busiest, and the holiday weeks around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year are the tightest of the year.
- Summer moves demand to Nantucket, New England and Europe. Friday afternoon departures and Sunday evening returns are the pinch points.
- Business travel runs steadily through the week, with Monday mornings and Thursday or Friday afternoons the busiest.
If your trip falls on a holiday weekend, book early. Flexibility of even a few hours can widen your options.
How the estimate becomes a quote
The route table above shows estimate ranges from our demonstration pricing model. They are estimates, not quotes: only a licensed operator can price a specific aircraft for a specific date.
What moves a private jet charter New York price:
- Aircraft category, the largest single factor.
- Positioning. New York has a large based fleet, but on peak days aircraft may need to fly in from elsewhere.
- Season and day of week.
- Airport. Handling and parking costs differ between Teterboro, Westchester and JFK.
- Waiting time and overnight costs if the aircraft stays with you.
Round trips are often better value than two one-ways if you return within a short time, because the aircraft does not fly home empty. Our private jet cost guide explains how the ranges are built. When you want a firm figure, request a quote through JetPriceCheck and we will show you options from licensed operators.
Empty legs from New York
With so many aircraft flying in and out of the New York area, empty legs are common, especially repositioning flights at the end of a holiday weekend or the end of a season. The section above shows any we can see. They follow the operator's schedule and can be cancelled if the original trip changes. See current listings on our empty-leg flights page.
Documents and customs for international departures
The United States does not carry out exit passport control for private departures in the way many countries do, but the operator must submit a passenger manifest to U.S. Customs and Border Protection before an international flight. That means your operator needs names and passport details in advance. At the other end, entry rules depend on your destination and nationality. For flights to Canada, the Bahamas or Mexico, check requirements before you fly.

How we arrange your departure from New York
- Tell us the basics: date, preferred departure time, where you will be leaving from in the city, destination, number of passengers and a realistic idea of the luggage.
- We match the airport to the trip. Your starting point, the time of day and the aircraft decide between Teterboro, Westchester and JFK, and we explain the trade-off rather than defaulting to one.
- We ask licensed operators for suitable aircraft, including ones already in the New York area, and check any airport limits such as Teterboro's weight rule or Westchester's voluntary night restraint.
- You compare options side by side, with the aircraft, the operator, the price and any conditions, and choose.
- We confirm the booking and send a trip sheet with the terminal, the car pick-up time and the crew details.
Throughout, the operator you choose flies the aircraft and holds the operating certificate; we look after the arrangements.
Frequently asked questions
