Midway: the close-in option

Chicago Midway International Airport is the airport in our data for Chicago. It sits on the South West Side, roughly ten miles from the Loop, and is a mixed airport: a busy airline operation with private aviation facilities alongside. Midway is compact, hemmed in on all sides by city blocks. That is part of its appeal, because nothing about getting there involves the expressway to the far north-west, but it also means the airport is built for the sort of aircraft that fly most Chicago trips: turboprops, light jets, midsize and super midsize jets. O'Hare and the northern suburbs

O'Hare, the city's main airline hub, lies about 18 miles north-west of downtown. It can handle private aircraft, but it is built around airline schedules, and most private travellers only use it when they are connecting from an airline flight or need a large long-range jet.

A simple rule works for most trips:

• Loop, West Loop, South Loop, Hyde Park and the southern suburbs: start with Midway.
• North Shore, Lake Forest, Northbrook and the north-west suburbs: ask about the northern business-aviation airports.
• Connecting from an international airline arrival: it may be simplest to fly out of the airport you land at, if the operator can position there.

The drive time between the Chicago airports can easily exceed an hour at rush hour, so the airport choice matters as much as the aircraft.

A few points about reading these numbers:

• They are turboprop figures. A modern single- or twin-engine turboprop is efficient on Midwest distances. A light jet shortens the flight, usually at a higher hourly rate.
• They are one way. A return flight on the same day, or within a day or two, is often priced as a round trip with the aircraft waiting, which can work out better than two separate one-ways.
• Toronto is an international flight. Arriving back in the United States means clearing US Customs and Border Protection at an airport with customs facilities, and the operator files passenger information in advance. We check the arrival airport for you.

Choosing the aircraft for a private jet from Chicago

Most Chicago trips fall into the range where three aircraft categories compete.

Turboprops suit trips of up to around two or three hours for small groups with modest luggage. They are often the most economical choice in our model, and many can use shorter runways.

Flying from Chicago in winter

Chicago weather is part of every private flight plan from November to March.

• De-icing takes time. On snowy mornings, aircraft need to be de-iced before departure, and queues can form at busy airports. Build fifteen to thirty minutes of slack into a winter schedule.
• Lake-effect snow can arrive quickly. Bands of snow coming off Lake Michigan can reduce visibility at short notice. Operators watch the forecast closely and may suggest moving a departure by a few hours.
• Hangar space helps. Keeping an aircraft in a heated hangar overnight before an early departure reduces de-icing time, but hangar space is limited and usually carries a fee.
• Aircraft choice. In winter, some operators prefer a jet to a turboprop on longer sectors for its ability to climb above icing layers quickly. Your operator makes that call for each flight.

What shapes the price of a private jet from Chicago
