From the New York area or Washington, there is no real contest: the alternative is a long drive to Hyannis followed by a ferry. From Boston, the drive and ferry take several hours in summer traffic, and a short flight becomes attractive.

The flight wins most clearly when:

• You are coming from outside New England and want to avoid the Cape traffic and the ferry.
• You are a family with luggage, children and pets, and want one journey instead of three.
• You have a fixed arrival time and cannot risk a sold-out ferry.

The ferry wins when you want your car on the island, when you are flexible, or when fog is forecast and you would rather not risk a diversion.

Combining Nantucket with other stops

Many summer trips are not simple returns. Families split time between the island, Martha's Vineyard, the Cape and a city home, and guests arrive from different places.
