Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Dulles is the main airport for private jet charter in the Washington area. It is an airline hub, but it is large, with long runways and general aviation facilities on the field, described on the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority's Dulles general aviation page. It lies in Northern Virginia, roughly 26 miles west of downtown.

For travelers in Tysons, Reston, Herndon, McLean or Loudoun County, Dulles is close. From downtown or Capitol Hill, the drive can be long at rush hour, so we plan departures around traffic. Dulles also handles international private flights, which makes it the usual choice for a London trip.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

Reagan National is minutes from downtown, but it is not a normal option for private jets. After 2001, general aviation was barred from DCA. It was reopened in 2005 under a strict security program, set out in the Federal Register rule and run by the TSA as the DCA Access Standard Security Program (DASSP).

In practice, a private flight into or out of DCA needs a participating operator, an armed security officer on board, passenger and crew screening at an approved gateway airport, and advance approval and a reservation for each flight, with a limited number of such flights a day. Very few charter trips go through this process. When a client asks for DCA, we check whether it is realistic for their trip; most of the time, Dulles or another airport in the region is simpler and cheaper.

Other airports around the capital

Northern Virginia and Maryland have several general aviation airports used by business aircraft. They can suit travelers who live or work nearby, and they have no airline traffic. Whether one fits your trip depends on your aircraft, the runway, the weather and your destination. We compare them with Dulles when your address makes it worthwhile.

Restricted airspace

The airspace around Washington is some of the most tightly controlled in the country. The Washington DC Special Flight Rules Area sets extra procedures for aircraft flying in the region, and temporary restrictions can appear at short notice for security events. Most private arrivals use Dulles. What shapes the price of private jet charter in Washington DC

1. Positioning. An aircraft already in the Washington area makes a short trip much cheaper than one flown in empty from elsewhere.
2. Aircraft category. On a one-hour hop, a larger jet adds cost without saving much time. On London, range sets the category.
3. Airport. Dulles and smaller regional airports differ in fees and ground time; DCA carries extra security costs and is rarely worthwhile.
