Vancouver International Airport for private jets

Vancouver International Airport sits on Sea Island in Richmond, south of the city, and it is the main airport for private flights in the Lower Mainland as well as for airlines. It is a large commercial hub, but business aircraft use a separate side of the airport with their own private terminals, so charter passengers don't go through the airline terminals. You drive up to a small building, meet your crew and board.

From downtown, Yaletown or the West Side, YVR is usually a manageable drive, with the bridges and rush hour the main variables. Smaller airfields in the region, including Boundary Bay in Delta and Pitt Meadows east of the city, mainly serve light aircraft and training, and can suit some turboprops and light jets for short trips. The Vancouver to Los Angeles corridor

The corridor we cover from Vancouver runs to Los Angeles, 923 nautical miles down the Pacific coast. It's a working route for the film and television industry, which moves producers, crews and talent between the two cities, and a leisure route for Vancouverites heading to Southern California's sun in winter.

Crossing the border by private jet

Most private jet charter Vancouver trips are international, because the nearest large US city is only a short flight away. Border formalities are simpler on a private flight than on an airline, but they still apply, and they differ in each direction.

Flying from Vancouver into the United States

Airline passengers at YVR clear US preclearance before boarding. On a private flight, the usual pattern is different: the operator files an electronic passenger manifest with US Customs and Border Protection through eAPIS before departure, and passengers clear CBP when they land at a US airport where officers are available. That airport isn't always the one closest to your final address, so we confirm the arrival airport and the clearance arrangements before you book. Every passenger needs a valid passport and whatever US visa or travel authorisation their nationality requires.

Flying home to Canada

When a private aircraft returns to Canada, the pilot reports the arrival to the Canada Border Services Agency in advance, as set out in CBSA's reporting memorandum, and the aircraft lands at an airport where border services are available. Visitors who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents may also need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or a visa, depending on their nationality. The operator handles the reporting; passengers are responsible for their own documents.

Whistler and the ski season

Whistler Blackcomb is one of North America's best-known ski resorts, about two hours north of Vancouver by road on the Sea to Sky Highway. For most private travellers, YVR is the airport for Whistler: guests fly into Vancouver, then continue by car, and some take a helicopter or floatplane for the last leg in good weather. The small airfields closer to the resort have limited facilities and are generally not practical for jets.

What this means for your trip:

• December to March is peak season. Christmas, New Year, Presidents' Day in the US and the spring break weeks are the busiest periods, and larger aircraft are booked first.
• Luggage decides the aircraft. Skis, boots and winter clothing take up space. A group of four or more usually needs a midsize jet or larger.
• Allow for the road. Snow and traffic on the Sea to Sky Highway can stretch the transfer. Plan the flight around a realistic arrival time at the resort, not just at the airport.
• Weather at YVR. Vancouver's winter is mostly rain and low cloud rather than snow, but occasional snow and freezing days bring de-icing delays.

San Francisco is a short, busy technology corridor that suits turboprops and light jets. East of the Rockies, flights run to four or five hours, and the comfort of a midsize jet (standing room, a proper lavatory, more baggage) makes a real difference. Leisure flying from Vancouver

• The Okanagan. Kelowna and the wine country are a short flight inland, popular in summer for vineyards, lakes and golf.
• Tofino and the coast. Vancouver Island's west coast and the remote coastal lodges are often reached by turboprop or floatplane, because the airstrips are small.
• Fishing and wilderness lodges. Northern British Columbia's lodges usually combine a flight to a regional airport with a floatplane or helicopter transfer.

What shapes the price of a private jet from Vancouver

The "From" figure in the route table is the lowest one-way estimate for the smallest aircraft that can fly the route nonstop. Our estimates are in US dollars, as most charter pricing on cross-border routes is. The price you'll be offered depends on:

1. Positioning. If the aircraft flies empty to Vancouver to collect you, or back to base afterwards, those hours are usually included. Aircraft based on the West Coast often give the better price.
2. Aircraft category. A larger jet raises the hourly rate; on long trips east it also makes the flight faster and more comfortable.
3. Border and handling fees. Landing, handling, customs and parking charges apply at both ends.

Empty legs from Vancouver

Empty legs are flights an aircraft makes anyway, usually to reposition after a one-way charter, and operators sometimes sell them at a reduced price. Vancouver produces them in ski season, when aircraft drop guests for Whistler and fly home empty.
