Why fly private from San Francisco

The Bay Area has one of the highest concentrations of private aviation users anywhere: technology founders and executives, venture investors, biotech leaders, and families with homes at Lake Tahoe, in wine country or in Southern California. Much of the traffic is short-haul. A board meeting in Los Angeles, a day with a portfolio company in Seattle, a ski weekend in Tahoe: these are trips where scheduled airlines technically go, but the day around the flight is the problem.

That problem is time. Getting to SFO in peak traffic, clearing security at a major hub and waiting for a fixed departure can turn a flight of about an hour into most of a day. SFO, Oakland or San José: choosing your airport

All three airports in our dataset handle business aviation, and each has its own trade-offs.

San Francisco International (SFO)

SFO sits on the Peninsula, roughly 13 miles south of downtown San Francisco, according to Wikipedia's SFO article. It is the natural choice for travellers based in the city itself, on the Peninsula or in the northern part of Silicon Valley. As the region's main international hub, it offers every service and can accommodate any size of aircraft.

The trade-off is that private flights share a very busy airfield with the airlines. When low cloud and fog roll in from the Pacific, SFO's closely spaced parallel runways cannot be used side by side for arrivals, and arrival rates drop. That rarely stops a departure, but it can delay the aircraft that is supposed to collect you, and it can affect a return flight into SFO. Handling and parking at a large hub also tend to cost more than at smaller airfields.

Oakland International (OAK)

Oakland sits on the eastern shore of the Bay, and for travellers in the East Bay, Berkeley, Walnut Creek or the Tri-Valley it is often much closer than SFO. Its business aviation facilities are on the airport's north field, separate from the main airline terminals, which keeps the private experience calm. Oakland's position also sometimes gives it a little more protection from the fog that affects SFO, although the whole Bay can be socked in on a grey morning.

For a traveller in San Francisco itself, the Bay Bridge makes Oakland a realistic alternative outside peak hours, and it is worth comparing quotes from both airports when an operator's aircraft is based on the East Bay side.

San José Mineta International (SJC)

San José is the natural airport for the South Bay and much of Silicon Valley: Palo Alto, Mountain View, Cupertino, Los Gatos and San José itself. For a founder in Menlo Park, it may be closer than SFO in afternoon traffic.

San José has a noise curfew that matters for late departures. According to San José Mineta International Airport, the curfew runs from 23:30 to 06:30 and is based on aircraft noise rather than weight; aircraft on the airport's Schedule of Authorized Aircraft are exempt, and many business jet types are on that list. If you plan to leave San José very late at night or very early in the morning, we confirm with the operator that the specific aircraft may operate at that time.

Reno is about 167 nautical miles from San Francisco, the shortest route on our list. Los Angeles

Los Angeles is about 253 nm from San Francisco and is one of the busiest private corridors on the West Coast. It carries business travellers between Silicon Valley and Southern California's entertainment, investment and real estate communities. A light jet is usually the right choice. At the Los Angeles end, several airports serve private jets, and the choice depends on whether you are heading to the Westside, Burbank and the Valley, or Orange County. Seattle

Seattle is about 611 nm from San Francisco, the longest route in our Bay Area network. When to book: the Bay Area calendar

Private jet demand from San Francisco follows the seasons of the places it serves as much as events in the city.

• Ski season (roughly December to March). Reno and Tahoe flights peak on Thursday and Friday afternoons and on Sunday, especially over holiday weekends.
• Tech and investor conferences. Large conferences in San Francisco bring waves of arrivals and departures, which tighten aircraft availability and parking at SFO.
• Summer. From June to August, Tahoe lake houses, Southern California and the Pacific Northwest all draw traffic, and Seattle trips often extend to the San Juan Islands.
