San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) is owned by the City of San José and lies a few miles north-west of downtown, close to Santa Clara and the main tech campuses along US-101 and I-880. This is a third-party figure based on ADS-B tracking; we have not verified it and show it only as a sign of relative demand. It says nothing about availability or price on your date.

The reasons for that traffic are easy to see. Entertainment, media and technology overlap between the two regions, and many trips are same-day returns: a morning flight south, meetings in Santa Monica, Burbank or Century City, and home the same evening. How to read it:

• Texas by turboprop is long. The model finds a turboprop can reach Dallas and Houston nonstop, but at more than five hours. Most business travellers on those trips choose a light or midsize jet, which is faster and more comfortable, and accept the higher hourly rate.
• Chicago is quicker than Houston. Even though Chicago is further, the model switches to a light jet, which flies faster, so the flight time drops.
• Atlanta and Toronto need a midsize jet in our model to fly nonstop from San José. Toronto is an international trip, so allow for Canadian entry rules on arrival and U.S. customs on the way home.

San José has a milder, sunnier climate than San Francisco, and low cloud from the Bay burns off earlier in the day. Weather rarely stops a flight from SJC itself.
