Oakland's airport: two airfields in one

The airport sits on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, south of downtown Oakland and close to I-880. It is run by the Port of Oakland, and it has recently gone through a change of name: the operator now uses the name Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport, which led to a dispute with San Francisco International and a settlement reported by CBS San Francisco. Whatever the signs say, the ICAO code is still KOAK and the IATA code OAK.

What matters more for private flyers is the layout. According to the airport's general aviation page and its noise office, the airport has two parts:

• South Field is the airline side, with the long main runway and the passenger terminals.
• North Field is the original airfield, with several smaller runways. It handles most general aviation, including corporate jets and charter aircraft.

For private passengers, this separation is the main reason to choose Oakland. You arrive at the business aviation facilities on the north side, well away from the airline crowds and car parks, and board the aircraft a short time before departure. You do not use the airline terminals at all.

Oakland or San Francisco?

For people in Berkeley, Oakland, Piedmont, Walnut Creek, Lafayette or the Tri-Valley, OAK is usually a shorter drive than SFO, and it avoids the Bay Bridge. San Francisco residents sometimes use Oakland too, especially when SFO is busy or when fog has slowed the airline schedule on the other side of the bay. People in Silicon Valley are usually better served by San José.

What these figures tell you:

• Texas in a turboprop means a long day. The turboprop is the lowest-cost category for Dallas and Houston in the model, but at five hours or more in the air, many travellers prefer a light or midsize jet that flies faster and offers a bigger cabin.
• Distance and time don't move together. Chicago is further than Houston but quicker in the model, because the light jet it uses is faster than the turboprop.
• The East Coast and Canada need a midsize jet to fly nonstop in the model. Toronto is an international trip: plan for Canadian entry on arrival and U.S. customs on return.

What shapes the price of a private jet from Oakland

1. Positioning. Many charter aircraft are based in Southern California. If the aircraft for your trip must fly up empty to collect you, that time is usually part of the price. One already in the Bay Area often costs less.

Fog is the Bay Area's best-known weather problem, and it affects the airports differently. SFO is known for delays when low cloud rolls in, because its parallel runways sit close together and arrivals must slow down. Oakland is usually affected less, although no airport in the region is immune. Winter storms bring wind and rain from the Pacific, and in the mountains snow can close smaller airports.
