Cape Town International Airport is the city's main airport, owned and operated by Airports Company South Africa. It lies on the Cape Flats, east of the city centre, and the drive to the City Bowl, the Atlantic seaboard or the Winelands is usually manageable outside peak traffic.
It is a mixed airport: a busy airline schedule on one side, and a separate private aviation area on the other. Private passengers use their own terminal, with border formalities handled on site for international flights, so you do not pass through the main terminal halls. Cape Town to Johannesburg
The trip to Johannesburg is the backbone of domestic private flying in South Africa. A light or midsize jet is noticeably faster, and many business travellers choose one to make a same-day return practical. The Garden Route and the Winelands
The coast east of Cape Town, towards George and Plettenberg Bay, is a short flight rather than a long drive. Turboprops are well suited to the smaller regional airports, and they carry golf bags and luggage for a family without difficulty. Safari connections
A safari is one of the most common reasons to fly privately from Cape Town. Most private lodges in and around Kruger National Park, and further afield in Botswana, Zambia and Namibia, are served by bush airstrips. These strips are usually gravel or grass, short and without facilities, so the final leg is typically flown in a light aircraft or turboprop rather than a jet. The usual pattern is a jet to a regional airport with border and fuel facilities, then a connecting light-aircraft flight to the lodge. The Gulf. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Jeddah link Cape Town with investors, family offices and holidaymakers from the Middle East. In our model all four need a heavy jet to fly nonstop. South America. São Paulo is a long crossing of the South Atlantic. Over-water sectors like this need extra fuel reserves and careful planning of diversion airports. Even where our model shows a heavy jet flying nonstop, operators often use a larger, longer-range aircraft for the ocean crossing, and each trip is checked by the operator against the aircraft, the load and the winds.
Europe. Flights to London, Paris or Geneva cross the whole continent and usually need a heavy or ultra long range jet to fly nonstop. A smaller aircraft with a planned fuel stop is often a sensible way to save money.

Cape Town's seasons for private flying
Cape Town's summer, roughly November to March, is the busiest time for private arrivals. Long days, the beaches of the Atlantic seaboard, the wine harvest and the Christmas and New Year holidays bring visitors from Europe, the Gulf and the rest of South Africa. In these months, aircraft based in the Cape are booked early, and handling at the airport gets busy around the holidays. If your dates are fixed, ask for a quote well ahead.
The winter months, roughly June to August, bring the Cape's rain and wind, but also quieter hotels and the start of whale season along the coast east of the city. Safari conditions further north are often at their best in the dry winter months, which makes a Cape Town and safari combination popular all year round.
Weather can matter on the day. The Cape is known for strong winds, and low cloud can affect flights into smaller regional strips. Building a little slack into a multi-stop itinerary reduces the stress of a delay.
Entering and leaving South Africa privately
A private flight does not change the immigration rules. Visitors need the same visa or exemption they would need on an airline; the Department of Home Affairs publishes the list of countries whose citizens are exempt for short visits. Customs and immigration are handled at airports designated for international traffic, which is why a safari itinerary crossing into Botswana or Zambia usually includes a stop at a border airport before the lodge.
