Its two airports are both world-class, but for private aviation they work very differently, and the right choice can save hours on the ground or make the difference between getting a slot and not. Haneda or Narita for a private jet?

Haneda Airport

Haneda Airport is on Tokyo Bay, close to the centre. From the business districts it is a short drive, which is why most private travellers want to use it. It operates around the clock. The difficulty is capacity: Haneda is one of the busiest airports in the world, and business aviation is given only a limited number of slots and parking stands. According to Universal Weather and Aviation's Tokyo guide, slots are requested well ahead, and there are limits on how long a business jet can stay parked.

Narita International Airport

Narita International Airport is in Chiba Prefecture, much further from the centre: allow well over an hour by road, more in traffic. In exchange, it has more room for business jets, longer parking stays and a dedicated business aviation terminal for quick passenger processing. Narita has a night curfew, so late-night departures and early-morning arrivals are not possible.

The usual pattern

In practice, many private trips to Tokyo combine the two. The aircraft drops passengers at Haneda, close to the city, then repositions to Narita or another airport for the length of the stay, and returns to Haneda to collect them. It adds some flying, but saves the passengers a long drive at each end.

Which approach suits you depends on:

• Your timing: a late-evening departure points to Haneda; Narita's curfew rules it out at night.
• The length of your stay: a long visit often means the aircraft cannot stay at Haneda.
• Where you are in the city: central Tokyo favours Haneda; Chiba and the east may favour Narita.

The ground transfer is part of the same decision. Tokyo traffic is dense, and the difference between a short run from Haneda and a long drive from Narita is felt at both ends of the trip. The Singapore corridor

Our curated corridor from Tokyo runs to Singapore, 2,862 nm across the South China Sea. Our pricing model estimates about 7 h in the air and a one-way range of roughly $67,000 to $95,000 in a super midsize jet, the smallest category that can make it nonstop. It links two of Asia's main financial centres and is used for business, board meetings and family travel. On a seven-hour flight, a super midsize jet's stand-up cabin and full lavatory are worth having; some clients move up to a heavy jet for more space. A few notes:

• Hong Kong is the one short trip in the list. A light jet can do it in our model, but on a flight of over four hours many clients prefer a midsize jet.
• Sydney is a long flight over the Pacific. Operators plan fuel reserves and alternates carefully for ocean crossings and may choose a larger aircraft than the minimum; every trip is checked by the operator.
• Dubai and Abu Dhabi need an ultra long range jet. These are the largest business jets and the fewest in number, so book as early as you can.

Domestic trips: Niseko, Kyoto and beyond

Many private flights from Tokyo stay in Japan.

• Niseko and Hokkaido. In winter, the powder snow of Hokkaido draws skiers from around the world. The usual gateway is New Chitose Airport near Sapporo, followed by a drive to the resorts. Winter weather can delay flights, so allow time.
• Kyoto and Osaka. Travellers visiting Kyoto's temples usually fly to one of the Osaka airports and continue by road.
• Okinawa and the southern islands for beach holidays, and other cities for factory and business visits.

Domestic charter within Japan is flown by Japanese operators. A foreign-registered aircraft that brings you to Japan generally cannot carry you on a paid domestic flight, so a trip with domestic legs may use a different operator for each part. Seasons in Tokyo

Spring (late March to April) brings the cherry blossom season, one of Japan's busiest travel periods. Demand for flights and hotels peaks, and slots at Haneda are harder to get.

Summer (June to August) starts with the rainy season in June and early July, followed by heat and humidity. Typhoons can affect Japan from late summer into autumn, disrupting flights for a day or more. Keep your plans flexible when a storm is forecast.

Autumn (October and November) brings the autumn leaves and pleasant weather, another popular time to visit.

Winter (December to March) is dry and clear in Tokyo, with the ski season in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps. The New Year holiday is one of the busiest travel periods of the year in Japan.

Golden Week in late April and early May is a cluster of national holidays when much of the country travels.

Entering and leaving Japan

Private flight passengers clear immigration and customs in a private or business aviation facility, but the same entry rules apply as on an airline. Many nationalities can visit Japan without a visa for short stays, while others must apply in advance. The government's Visit Japan Web service lets travellers complete immigration and customs procedures online before arrival. Check the current requirements for every passenger before you book, and remember that your destination's rules also apply.

What drives the price of a private jet from Tokyo

The estimates on this page come from our pricing model, built on published market rates. A real quote depends on:

1. Positioning. Fewer large business jets are based in Japan than in many other markets. If the aircraft comes from Hong Kong, Singapore or elsewhere, the empty flights are usually part of the price.
2. Parking and repositioning. If the aircraft cannot stay at Haneda, the flights to and from Narita or another airport are added.
3. Aircraft category. Most international trips from Tokyo need a super midsize, heavy or ultra long range jet, and every hour is billed at that rate.
4. Season. Cherry blossom season, Golden Week, New Year and the ski season are the busiest times.
5. One-way or return. For a stay of several days, the aircraft often leaves and returns, and both empty legs are part of the price.
