When another airport is the better choice

Essendon Fields does not suit every flight. Very large aircraft, some international arrivals and late-night movements may be better handled at Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine, the city's main international gateway further north. Avalon, south-west towards Geelong, is another option for some trips. Which airport is right depends on the aircraft, the time of day, border clearance arrangements for an international leg and where you are staying. The Essendon Fields curfew

Essendon Fields has a night curfew. The Department of Infrastructure states that take-offs and landings are restricted between 11pm and 6am. During those hours, jets of the size used for most charter flights cannot use the airport except in emergencies, while some propeller aircraft that meet noise standards can.

This matters most on the return leg. If you fly to Sydney for an evening event, the aircraft needs to land back at Essendon Fields before the curfew, or the flight has to be planned into a different airport. A few points stand out. Tokyo is only slightly further than Hong Kong, but that extra distance pushes it into the ultra long range category in our model, which changes the estimate sharply. Johannesburg is a long crossing of the Southern Ocean and Indian Ocean with few alternate airports.

Most of these flights spend hours over open water. Operators carry extra fuel reserves and plan diversion airports for these sectors, so the practical range of an aircraft with a full cabin is shorter than the brochure figure. The estimate ranges in our tables are a starting point. An operator's quote depends on:

1. Aircraft category, which is the largest factor by far.
2. Where the aircraft is. If it has to fly to Melbourne first, or fly home empty after a one-way trip, you pay for that positioning.
