Others go to La Romana and the Casa de Campo resort, to Santo Domingo for business, or to the quieter north coast and the Samaná Peninsula. The table above lists the two main airports in our data. A third, smaller airport matters a great deal for private flyers.

Punta Cana International Airport

Punta Cana International Airport is the country's busiest airport and one of the busiest in the Caribbean. Unusually, it is privately owned. It serves the resort areas of Punta Cana, Bávaro, Cap Cana and the east coast, and it handles a large volume of private aircraft alongside its airline traffic, with private passengers cleared away from the airline terminals.

For most east-coast villas and resorts, the transfer from the airport is short. That convenience is a big part of why so many private flights to the Dominican Republic end here.

Las Américas International Airport, Santo Domingo

Las Américas International Airport serves Santo Domingo, the capital, from the coast east of the city. It is the natural choice for business, government and family trips to the capital, and for the colonial old town. It is a commercial airport that also handles private aircraft.

La Romana and Casa de Campo

Between Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, the La Romana International Airport sits just minutes from the Casa de Campo resort, with its golf courses, marina and villas. Private aircraft have flown into La Romana for decades; according to Casa de Campo's private jet page, the airport is about five minutes from the resort. It is not yet in our airport data, so we check it with the operator for each trip, but for anyone staying at Casa de Campo or nearby, it is usually the obvious choice.

Other airports

The north coast around Puerto Plata and the Samaná Peninsula have their own airports, and Santo Domingo has a smaller secondary airfield. We arrange flights to these on request, after checking the airport's services and suitability for the aircraft.

Typical private trips from the Dominican Republic, as estimates

• Washington, D.C. (1,312 nm): about 5 h 15 min, $17,000 to $29,500.
• New York (1,370 nm): about 5 h 30 min, $17,500 to $30,500.
• Boston (1,443 nm): about 5 h 45 min, $18,500 to $32,000.
• Toronto (1,605 nm): about 4 h 30 min in a light jet, $25,500 to $36,000.

Look at Toronto: it is the longest trip in the list but has one of the shorter flight times, because at that distance the smallest capable category in our model becomes a jet, which flies much faster than a turboprop. On every long sector, operators plan extra fuel reserves for the over-water flight and often recommend a light, midsize or super midsize jet, even where a turboprop has the range. Each trip is checked by the operator before it is confirmed.

Entry to the Dominican Republic and the return home

Arriving. A private flight to the Dominican Republic is an international flight. Every passenger needs a valid passport and must meet the entry requirements for their nationality. The Dominican Republic uses an electronic entry and exit form, the e-Ticket, for air travellers; your operator or handling agent will confirm how it applies to your private flight and which details they need from you. Complete it early, as it can be filled in as soon as your flight details are known.

Returning to the US. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, private and charter flights from abroad must send electronic passenger and crew manifests before departure and land first at an airport where CBP can clear the flight. From Punta Cana, that usually means a nonstop flight to a Florida or East Coast gateway with customs, or a first stop there before a domestic onward leg. Canadian travellers clear Canadian customs at their arrival airport.

When to fly private to the Dominican Republic

• December to April. The high season, dry and warm, with the heaviest private traffic at Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, Presidents' Day and the March school holidays. Book early for those weeks.
• Golf season. The east coast and Casa de Campo are major golf destinations, busiest in winter and spring.
• Easter to June. Popular and usually easier to book, with good weather.
• Hurricane season, 1 June to 30 November. The Dominican Republic lies in the path of Atlantic storms, with the most risk in late summer and early autumn. Most days are flyable, but a storm can close airports and disperse aircraft. Watch the National Hurricane Center forecasts and keep a fallback plan.

Hot afternoons reduce aircraft performance. On long sectors with a full cabin, an early departure helps.

• Turboprops suit shorter hops around the Caribbean, to Puerto Rico, the Bahamas or Turks and Caicos, and domestic flights between Dominican airports.

What drives the price of a private jet to the Dominican Republic

1. Positioning. Most aircraft flying here are based in the US. Empty flights to collect you or return home are usually part of the price.

They suit flexible travellers, because the date, time and airports are fixed and the flight can be withdrawn if the aircraft is chartered in full.
