Bahamas charter flights: how private flying across the islands works

Bahamas charter flights by private jet or turboprop are the most practical way to reach an archipelago that airlines serve well only at its main airport. Scheduled flights concentrate on Nassau, with a smaller network to Grand Bahama and a few of the larger Out Islands; almost everything else involves a connection, a ferry or a long wait. A private charter lets you fly from Florida, the US East Coast or further afield straight to the island where you are staying, when you choose, with your luggage and your pets on board. Private charter or public charter?

The phrase "charter flights" covers two different products. A public charter sells individual seats on a scheduled-style flight, often in a small aircraft, to set islands on set days. A private charter is an aircraft booked for your group alone, flying on your schedule to the airport you choose. This page is about private charter. The islands and where private aircraft land

The Bahamas is a chain of more than 700 islands and cays spread across a large area of shallow sea east of Florida and north of Cuba. Only around thirty are inhabited, and the airports range from a full international airport in Nassau to short island strips that suit only small aircraft in daylight.

• New Providence (Nassau and Paradise Island). The capital and the main international gateway, Lynden Pindling International Airport, handles everything from turboprops to long-range jets and has a dedicated private aviation side. • Grand Bahama (Freeport). The second city of the country, close to the Florida coast, with its own international airport. It suits business trips, second-home owners on the island's east end and marinas.
• Abaco (Marsh Harbour and the cays). A sailing and boating destination to the north-east, popular with owners of homes and boats on the outer cays.
• Exuma (George Town and the cays). A long chain of cays famous for its water, with a main airport near George Town and smaller strips further north.
• Eleuthera and Harbour Island. A long, thin island with several airports; Harbour Island itself has no airport and is reached by a short boat ride from North Eleuthera.
• Bimini. The closest island to Florida, about 50 miles from the coast, a short hop for fishing and weekend trips.
• Andros, Long Island, Cat Island and the southern islands. Quieter islands with small airports, where a turboprop is often the natural aircraft.

Ports of entry and island runways

Two practical questions decide how a private trip to the Out Islands is planned.

Is the island a port of entry? Arrivals from abroad must first land at an airport designated as a port of entry, where Bahamian customs and immigration can clear the flight. According to the Out Islands ports-of-entry list, several Out Island airports are ports of entry, some provide clearance only with prior notice and others have none. If your island is not a port of entry, the aircraft lands first at one that is, clears, and then flies the last short leg.

Can the aircraft use the runway? Many island strips are short, some are unlit and several have limited fuel. A turboprop or light jet is often the only practical choice for these airports, and even a larger jet that can land may not be able to take off again with full fuel on a hot afternoon. The operator runs the performance numbers for every leg. Sometimes the right plan is a larger jet from the mainland to Nassau, then a turboprop for the last hop.

Typical private trips to The Bahamas, as estimates

Our pricing model gives these example estimates for trips between Nassau and major US hubs, in the smallest aircraft category that can fly each sector nonstop. They are estimates, not quotes:

• Washington, D.C. (835 nm): about 3 h 30 min, $11,500 to $19,500.

Flights to the Out Islands follow the same logic: from Florida, most islands are one to two hours away in a turboprop or light jet, and a direct flight to a port-of-entry island saves the stop in Nassau. The longer sectors from the Northeast and Texas cross open water. Operators plan extra fuel for over-water flying and often choose a light or midsize jet rather than a turboprop for comfort and margin; each trip is checked by the operator before it is confirmed.

Entering The Bahamas and returning to the United States

A private flight to The Bahamas is an international flight, even when it lasts less than an hour.

Arriving. Each passenger needs a valid passport and must meet the entry rules for their nationality. The operator sends passenger details before departure, and you clear customs and immigration at the first Bahamian port of entry. Check the current requirements for your nationality with the Bahamian authorities or through the official Bahamas tourism site before you travel.

Going home to the US. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, private and charter flights from abroad must send electronic passenger and crew manifests before departure and land first at an airport where CBP can clear them. On the way home from an Out Island, that usually means a nonstop flight to a Florida or East Coast airport with customs, or a stop there before an onward domestic leg.

When to fly: New Year, winter and hurricane season

The Bahamas has a clear private flying calendar.

• Christmas and New Year. The busiest period of the year. A private jet to The Bahamas for New Year's Eve needs early planning: aircraft, crews and airport parking are in short supply in the last days of December, and island strips with limited parking fill first. If you want to be on an island for New Year, book as soon as your dates are firm and expect less choice as the date approaches.
• January to April. High season for second homes, sailing and fishing, with busy school-holiday weekends in February, March and around Easter.
• May to early summer. Quieter and often better value, with settled weather.
• Hurricane season, 1 June to 30 November. Most days are flyable, but storms can close airports and move aircraft away for days. Watch the National Hurricane Center forecasts, and keep a fallback date in late summer and early autumn.

Hot afternoons reduce aircraft performance, particularly on short island runways. Early departures often allow more fuel and luggage, and smoother air.

Choosing an aircraft for Bahamas charter flights

• Turboprops are the workhorses of the islands: economical, capable on short strips and ideal for Florida hops and island-to-island flights.
• Light jets offer more speed and comfort for four to six passengers from Florida and the Southeast, where the runway allows.
• Midsize and super midsize jets suit the Northeast, the Midwest and Texas, larger families and heavy luggage, landing in Nassau, Freeport or larger Out Island airports.
• Large jets fly to Nassau from further afield; an onward turboprop can then complete the trip.

What shapes the price of a Bahamas charter

1. Positioning. Most aircraft flying to The Bahamas are based in Florida or elsewhere in the US. Empty flights to collect you or return to base are usually included in the price.
2. The island. A direct flight to a port-of-entry island is often cheaper overall than a jet to Nassau plus a connection, but only if the aircraft can use the runway.
3. Waiting time. For a stay of several days, two one-way flights usually cost less than keeping an aircraft and crew on the island.
4. Season. Christmas, New Year and school holidays carry the highest demand.
5. Fees. Landing, handling, parking and passenger charges apply in The Bahamas and at the US arrival airport.

Much Bahamas flying is one way: an aircraft drops a family on an island and flies home empty. Operators sometimes sell those repositioning flights at a lower price. They suit flexible travellers, because the date, time and airports are fixed and the flight can be withdrawn if the aircraft is chartered in full.
