The last thing anyone wants after that is a queue at a crowded departure hall and a connection through another hub. A private flight takes you from the island to Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong or further on your own timetable, with your luggage, surfboards and family together. Ngurah Rai International Airport for private jets

Bali has one international airport: I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, often called Denpasar airport, on the narrow neck of land between Kuta and Jimbaran in the south of the island. Its single runway reaches out into the sea. It is a busy airline hub, with flights from Australia, Asia and the Middle East arriving throughout the day, and it handles private flights with separate processing for their passengers.

What this means for a private trip:

• Parking is limited. The apron is busy, and space for business jets can be tight in peak seasons. On a stay of several days, the aircraft may drop you and reposition elsewhere, then return to collect you. That extra flying is part of the price.
• Timing matters. Peak airline times, especially in the evening and around holiday weekends, can make slots harder to arrange.
• The drive can be the slowest part of the trip. The south of Bali has heavy traffic, and the airport sits at a bottleneck. From Ubud or the north of Seminyak, allow much more time than the distance suggests. The toll road across the bay helps for travellers coming from Nusa Dua and the Bukit peninsula.

Nyepi: the day the airport closes

Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, is the Hindu new year in the Saka calendar. For 24 hours, the island stops: no lights, no traffic, no work and no noise. According to ANTARA News, Ngurah Rai airport closes to all flights for the whole period, except for emergency and medical flights. Private jets are no exception.

Nyepi usually falls in March, but its date changes each year with the lunar calendar. If your trip is near it:

• plan to arrive at least a day before and leave at least a day after;
• expect heavy demand for flights either side of the closure;
• remember that guests must stay in their hotel or villa for the day.

The Singapore corridor

Our curated corridor from Bali runs to Singapore, 903 nm across the Java Sea. Our pricing model estimates about 3 h 45 min in the air and a one-way range of roughly $12,000 to $21,000, with a turboprop as the smallest category that can make it nonstop. For a flight of this length over water, operators often use a jet, which is faster and carries more reserves; every trip is checked by the operator against the weather and the aircraft's performance. A light or midsize jet is the usual choice for a family.

Singapore is the business hub of South-East Asia and a common connection to long-haul flights, so this route is used both by residents of Singapore flying to their villas and by holidaymakers continuing their journey. Most of these flights cross open sea or remote country. Operators plan fuel reserves and alternate airports carefully, and on the longest sectors they may choose a larger aircraft than our model's minimum. Every trip is checked by the operator before it is confirmed.

Australia is a natural market for Bali: Melbourne and Sydney are the busiest links in the airline schedule, and families often fly privately at the start and end of school holidays. Island hopping in Indonesia

Bali is also the starting point for trips to Lombok, the Gili Islands, Sumba and Labuan Bajo, the gateway to Komodo National Park. Most are short flights, and a turboprop can suit airports with shorter runways. Domestic charter within Indonesia is flown by operators authorised in Indonesia, so a trip that combines an international flight with domestic legs may use different operators for each. Luggage, surfboards and the right cabin

Holiday trips from Bali carry far more than business trips. A family of five leaving after three weeks may have ten suitcases, a pram, a couple of surfboards and a set of golf clubs, and that load, more than the distance, often decides the aircraft. Surfboards are the usual surprise: long boards may not fit in the hold of a light jet at all, and some operators ask for them to be packed in a specific way. A midsize or super midsize jet has a larger hold, and on longer flights some of the luggage can be reached from the cabin. Tell us the number and size of bags, and the length of any boards, when you ask for a quote, and we will check with the operator before you arrive at the airport.

Seasons in Bali

The dry season (roughly April to October) is the peak for visitors, with July and August the busiest months, when European and Australian school holidays overlap. Private jet demand and airport congestion are highest then.

The wet season (roughly November to March) brings heavy tropical showers, usually in the afternoon or at night, and occasional storms that can delay flights. The Christmas and New Year period is still very busy despite the rain.

Nyepi, usually in March, closes the airport for a day, as described above.

Lunar New Year and Australian school holidays bring further peaks. Book early if your dates fall then.

Entering and leaving Indonesia

Private flight passengers clear immigration and customs through separate processing, but the same entry rules apply as on an airline. Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online in advance through Indonesia's official e-Visa portal; others need a visa before travel. Bali also charges foreign visitors a tourist levy, which is paid online through the provincial government's Love Bali system. Rules change from time to time, so check the current requirements for every passenger before you book.

For onward trips, your destination's rules apply too: Australia, for instance, requires a visa or electronic travel authority for most visitors, and has strict biosecurity rules on food and plant material.

What drives the price of a private jet from Bali

The estimates on this page come from our pricing model, built on published market rates. A real quote depends on:

1. Positioning. Few large business jets are based on the island. If the aircraft comes from Singapore, Jakarta or Australia, the empty flights to collect you and return are usually part of the price.
2. Parking and waiting. If the aircraft cannot stay in Bali during your holiday, it will reposition and return, adding flying time.
3. Aircraft category. A trip to Australia or Tokyo needs a super midsize jet at least; every hour is billed at that rate.
4. Season. July and August, Christmas and New Year, and the days around Nyepi are the busiest times.
5. One-way or return. For a two-week holiday, two one-way flights are usually better value than keeping the aircraft on the island.
