Atlanta gives private travellers two very different options in our data, and the right one usually depends on where you are starting and where you are going.

DeKalb–Peachtree Airport (PDK): the business aviation choice

DeKalb–Peachtree Airport in Chamblee, north-east of the city centre, is the airport most private travellers in Atlanta know as "PDK". According to DeKalb County, it is Georgia's second-busiest airport and works as a general aviation reliever for the region, taking corporate jets, business aircraft and helicopters away from the airline traffic at Hartsfield–Jackson. It has no scheduled airline service, which is exactly why it suits charter: private terminals, short walks to the aircraft and no queues for airline security.

For anyone based in Buckhead, Midtown, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody or the northern suburbs, PDK is usually the closer airport. It is roughly eight miles from downtown, but in Atlanta distance matters less than traffic, and the drive can change a lot between a Tuesday at 10am and a Friday at 5pm.

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)

Hartsfield–Jackson, south of downtown, is a commercial hub first. Private aircraft can use it, and for some trips it makes sense: when you are connecting with an international airline flight, when you are staying on the south side of the metro, or when a large aircraft is involved. For most private jet charter Atlanta trips, however, a busy airline hub adds taxi time and complexity without any benefit.

A few things stand out. First, the distances are close together: Chicago, Miami, Houston and Dallas all fall between about 500 and 630 nautical miles, so budgets for those trips sit in a similar range. Second, the flight times are for a turboprop. A light or midsize jet cruises faster and would usually shorten each of these trips, at a higher hourly rate. Third, Toronto is an international flight: it needs passports for everyone on board, and customs on arrival in Canada and again when you come back to the United States.

Atlanta to Miami: our curated corridor

Miami is the Atlanta corridor on our curated list, and it is a good example of how a private flight changes the trip. Airline service between the two cities is frequent, but the door-to-door time includes the drive to Hartsfield–Jackson, security, boarding and the walk through Miami International. What decides the price of a private jet from Atlanta

1. Where the aircraft is. If the nearest suitable aircraft is based in Atlanta, you pay mainly for your own flight. If it has to fly in from elsewhere, or return empty afterwards, those positioning hours are usually included.

Flexible and last-minute flights from Atlanta

Charter flights in the United States are flown by operators certificated under 14 CFR Part 135, the federal rules for on-demand air carriers.
