Private jet Peachtree: Atlanta's business aviation airport

A private jet Peachtree flight is the way most business aviation travellers reach Atlanta. DeKalb–Peachtree Airport (ICAO KPDK, IATA PDK) sits in Chamblee, north-east of the city centre, and is run by DeKalb County as a general aviation reliever airport: its job is to take smaller aircraft away from Hartsfield–Jackson, one of the busiest airline airports anywhere. PDK has no scheduled airline service, but by number of take-offs and landings it is the second-busiest airport in Georgia, according to Wikipedia. For a private passenger that combination means a small-airport experience with big-city access.

The facts panel and widgets above give you the codes, coordinates, runway figure, live weather and the driving route from central Atlanta. This guide explains what sits behind them: why PDK is the default private airport for Atlanta, the county's weight and noise rules that shape aircraft choice, customs for international arrivals, how it compares with Hartsfield and how a charter through PDK is put together.

JetPriceCheck is a charter broker. We do not own or operate aircraft. We ask licensed operators for suitable aircraft, compare the options and stay with the booking until you land. The JetPriceCheck homepage explains how it works.

Why PDK is the private airport for Atlanta

Atlanta's airline airport, Hartsfield–Jackson, is built for the world's airline network: huge terminals, long taxi routes and a schedule that runs from dawn to late at night. Private aircraft can use it, but they share the system with a very large airline operation. PDK was designed for everything else.

Three things make it the usual choice:

  • Location. Chamblee is in the northern part of the metro area, close to Buckhead, Perimeter Center, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and the northern suburbs where many companies and residents are based. For those addresses, PDK is often the shorter drive.
  • Scale. Without airline traffic, ground times are short. You arrive at a fixed-base operator (FBO), your bags go straight to the aircraft and you board. If the term is new, our explainer on what an FBO is covers the services they provide.
  • Choice of aircraft. A busy business aviation airport attracts based aircraft and transient traffic, which widens the pool of options for a charter request.

We do not name individual handlers on this page because we have not verified the current list. The operator confirms its handler when your flight is booked, and we pass the address to your driver.

Who flies private through PDK

The typical private jet Peachtree passenger is one of these:

  • Corporate travellers from Atlanta's headquarters and regional offices, flying to meetings across the Southeast and the East Coast.
  • Sports, music and film travellers, reflecting the city's large entertainment industry.
  • Families and leisure travellers heading to Florida, the Gulf Coast, the Caribbean and mountain resorts.
  • Business visitors flying in for a day of meetings in Buckhead or Perimeter Center.

PDK's rules: weight and noise

PDK sits in a residential area, and the county manages the airport with rules that matter for aircraft selection and late-night plans. Most business jet trips are not affected, but the largest aircraft and the latest departures are.

Weight limits

DeKalb County's airport documentation cites a weight-bearing limit on the main runway, and heavier aircraft need special permission to operate. In practice this means light, midsize and super midsize jets, the aircraft that carry most of the airport's business traffic, operate normally, while the heaviest long-range jets may need prior approval or may be better served by another Atlanta airport. We ask the operator to confirm the position for any heavy aircraft before we present it as an option.

Noise programme and voluntary curfew

The county runs a noise programme that includes preferential runway use, specific procedures for jet aircraft and a voluntary curfew from 11 pm to 6 am, with emergency and medical flights exempt. A voluntary curfew is not a legal ban, but operators respect it, and it affects how we plan a late return from a meeting or an early departure for a morning appointment somewhere else. If a flight would land or depart in those hours, we discuss alternatives, including a slightly earlier departure or a different Atlanta airport.

Planning a day around PDK's rules

The rules are easiest to handle when they are part of the plan from the first call rather than a surprise the evening before. Three habits help:

  • Tell us the latest time you could possibly leave. If a dinner or a match might run late, we plan the return with a margin before 11 pm, or we agree in advance that the aircraft will use another airport for a later departure.
  • Share the full passenger and luggage list early. Weight matters at PDK more than at airports with longer, stronger runways. Golf bags, ski equipment and extra passengers change the numbers, and a late addition can change the aircraft.
  • Keep the ground plan flexible. If the departure moves to Hartsfield or another field, the car needs a new address, so we keep the driver informed alongside the crew.

Runway and aircraft at PDK

Public airport data (OurAirports) lists PDK's longest runway at 6,001 ft. That is comfortable for turboprops, light jets and most midsize and super midsize jets on typical sectors. The aircraft screening section above shows which categories fit by runway length alone.

For larger aircraft, the runway and the weight rules work together. A heavy jet planning a long flight needs both enough runway for its take-off weight and approval under the county's rules. On a hot Georgia summer afternoon, take-off performance is also reduced, which can limit fuel and passengers. The operator runs these numbers for each flight.

Our aircraft guide explains the categories, passenger numbers and ranges. For most PDK trips the practical choices are:

  • Turboprops and light jets for four to seven passengers on regional trips across the Southeast.
  • Midsize and super midsize jets for Florida, the Northeast, Texas and the Midwest, and for larger groups or more luggage.
  • Heavy jets when the group size or range needs one, planned with the weight rules in mind.

PDK or Hartsfield–Jackson: choosing an Atlanta airport

Hartsfield–Jackson is about 16 nm from PDK by our airport data. Both can handle private aircraft; which one suits you depends on your address, aircraft and timing.

Question DeKalb–Peachtree (PDK) Hartsfield–Jackson (ATL)
Main traffic Business and general aviation Airline hub
Ground delays Usually short Can be long at airline peaks
Best for addresses in Buckhead, Perimeter Center, northern and eastern suburbs South Atlanta, the airport area, south-side suburbs
Heaviest aircraft Subject to county weight rules Built for widebody airliners
Late-night flights Voluntary curfew applies Airline-scale operating hours

For most business jet trips to the north side of the city, PDK is quicker door to door. Hartsfield is an option for the heaviest aircraft, for trips that must run through the night, and for connections with airline flights. The metro area also has other general aviation airports that operators may suggest for specific addresses or aircraft.

Customs at PDK

The FAA Chart Supplement current at the time of writing lists PDK as a Landing Rights Airport. That means international arrivals can clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the airport, but the operator must request permission to land in advance. The facts panel shows customs as "on request" for that reason.

For you as a passenger:

  • Advance passenger information. The operator files the manifest through eAPIS before departure. Names and passport details must be final.
  • Your own entry documents. Every passenger needs a valid passport and the right visa or authorisation for the United States.
  • Timing. CBP availability is agreed for a specific arrival time, and a significant change to the schedule may need a new request.

For departures abroad, our guide to private jet security and passports covers what passengers usually need to bring.

Getting between PDK and the city

PDK is inside the metro area's northern arc, close to Interstate 285 and the Peachtree Industrial corridor. The map above shows the driving route from central Atlanta.

  • Buckhead, Brookhaven and Perimeter Center are close by road.
  • Midtown and Downtown are further, and Atlanta's traffic can make a short distance slow at rush hour.
  • Northern suburbs such as Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Roswell and Alpharetta are often easier from PDK than from Hartsfield.

Most passengers are met by a chauffeured car at the FBO door. If you want the car arranged with the flight, our private jet with chauffeur service handles the pick-up and tracks your arrival time.

Routes from PDK

The corridor in our data that uses PDK is Miami–Atlanta, the link between the Southeast's two largest business centres. It is short enough for a light jet or a turboprop, and time on the ground is what separates a good trip from a slow one, which is why the Atlanta end usually uses PDK.

Beyond that corridor, private flights from PDK commonly head to:

  • Florida in winter: Palm Beach, Naples, Tampa and the Keys.
  • The Northeast for business: New York, Washington and Boston.
  • Texas and the Midwest, reflecting Atlanta's role as a corporate headquarters city.
  • The Caribbean and Mexico for leisure, where customs on return makes PDK practical.
  • Mountain and golf resorts in the Carolinas and the Rockies.

The Atlanta departures hub groups the city's routes, and the directory of charter routes lists every route we cover.

Seasons and weather at PDK

Atlanta's flying calendar is shaped by heat and storms more than snow. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms that can pause departures across the region for short spells, and high temperatures reduce aircraft performance, which matters on a 6,001 ft runway. Winter is usually mild, though occasional ice storms cause disruption that the area is less equipped to handle than northern cities.

Demand rises around major sports events, conventions, college football weekends and holidays. When the city hosts a large event, aircraft, parking and ground transport all get busier; book early and expect firm arrival windows.

What a private jet from PDK costs

Charter prices depend mostly on the aircraft, the flight time and where the aircraft is based. PDK adds landing, parking and handling fees, which vary by aircraft size and length of stay. Because many aircraft are based around Atlanta, positioning costs are often moderate.

Our private jet cost guide explains how estimates are built, and each route page shows estimated ranges by aircraft category. Those are estimates from our pricing model, not quotes. A firm price comes from a licensed operator for a specific aircraft and date.

Empty legs from PDK

A busy business aviation airport generates repositioning flights, and some are offered as one-way empty legs at lower prices. They depend on another client's booking and can change, so they suit flexible travellers. Our empty-leg flights page explains how they work.

How we arrange your private jet Peachtree flight

We start with passengers, luggage, dates and the addresses at each end. We ask licensed operators for aircraft that suit the route, check the PDK-specific points (weight approval for heavy jets, the voluntary curfew, customs timing on international returns) and present the options with the trade-offs laid out. You choose; the operator flies; we coordinate until you land.
