Lanseria or OR Tambo?

Lanseria International

Lanseria International Airport sits north-west of the city, between Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is privately owned, and it is the centre of the country's charter and business aviation industry, with many operators and private terminals on the field. According to the airport, the drive from Sandton is around 45 minutes, with Pretoria a similar distance, which makes it practical for the northern suburbs and the capital.

For most private flights, Lanseria is the default. Border and customs formalities for international flights can be handled on site, the terminal experience is built for small numbers of passengers, and operators with aircraft based there do not have to position them across the city. O. R. Tambo International

O. R. Tambo International Airport, east of the city near Kempton Park, is South Africa's main airline hub and the busiest airport on the continent's southern half. Private flights use it too, especially when passengers are connecting to or from an airline flight, when a very large aircraft is involved, or when the passengers are based in the eastern suburbs. We look at where you are staying, whether you are connecting to an airline, the aircraft, and where the operator is based. For many trips Lanseria is simpler; for an airline connection OR Tambo can save a transfer across the city.

Flying from altitude: why Johannesburg is different

Johannesburg lies on the Highveld, well over a kilometre above sea level. At that height the air is thinner, and on hot summer afternoons it is thinner still. Aircraft need more runway to take off, climb less steeply and may be limited in how much fuel and payload they can carry.

For short trips this rarely matters. For long flights it can. An aircraft that flies a long route nonstop from a sea-level airport may need to take off with less fuel from Johannesburg on a hot day, which can mean a fuel stop or a larger aircraft. Operators calculate this for every flight; we check the result before we present an option, and a cooler morning departure sometimes solves the problem.

Regional trips and safari connections

Cape Town

Johannesburg to Cape Town is the country's core private corridor. Our model estimates about 3 hours in a turboprop, the smallest aircraft that can fly the 683 nm nonstop, at roughly USD 9,500 to 16,500 one way. A light or midsize jet is quicker, and business travellers often choose one to make a same-day return work.

Kruger and the Lowveld

The private reserves around Kruger National Park are a short flight east of Johannesburg. Some lodges are served by regional airports with scheduled flights; many others have their own gravel or grass airstrips. These bush strips are usually too short and too basic for jets, so the final leg is flown in a light aircraft or turboprop. A common pattern is to fly direct from Lanseria in a turboprop, or to take a jet to a regional airport and connect to a light aircraft there.

Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and beyond

Johannesburg is the usual starting point for safaris in the Okavango Delta, for Victoria Falls, and for trips to Namibia and Mozambique. International legs need to start and end at airports designated for border formalities, so a lodge itinerary across a border usually includes a clearance stop before the bush flight. Business across Africa

Many African capitals have limited or indirect airline connections to Johannesburg. A private jet can cover a multi-city trip in days rather than a week of connections. Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. Jeddah and Riyadh are the closest major Gulf destinations, and in our model a super midsize jet can reach them nonstop. Abu Dhabi and Dubai are slightly further, pushing the smallest nonstop category to a heavy jet. The altitude point above applies: on a hot day, the operator may recommend a larger aircraft or a stop.

India. Mumbai crosses the Indian Ocean. Over-water sectors need extra fuel reserves and planned diversion airports, so operators sometimes propose a larger aircraft than our model's minimum for the crossing. Each trip is checked by the operator.

South America. São Paulo is a long South Atlantic crossing with the same over-water considerations. Operators often use larger, longer-range aircraft for it.

Europe. London, Paris and Geneva are a full crossing of Africa and usually need a heavy or ultra long range jet to fly nonstop; a planned fuel stop in a smaller jet is a common way to save money.

Entry, exit and paperwork

Private passengers follow the same visa rules as airline passengers. The Department of Home Affairs lists the countries whose citizens are exempt from a visa for short visits. International flights clear formalities at designated airports; Lanseria and OR Tambo both handle international traffic. Send every passenger's nationality with your enquiry, because the operator needs it for the flight documents and for permits to other countries on the route. Planning checklist for a Johannesburg departure
