Hours, customs and government services

Lanseria's 24-hour customs service is its best-known feature for private flights. The airport says that all the relevant government departments are represented on site, including immigration, border police, customs and excise, and health and agriculture services. The Department of Home Affairs lists Lanseria among the airports with immigration services.

In practice, that means an international private flight can arrive in Johannesburg at Lanseria, clear formalities there and be in Sandton shortly afterwards, without going near OR Tambo.

Runway and aircraft performance

Lanseria's runway handles business jets of most sizes, from light jets to large long-range aircraft, and regional airliners. As at OR Tambo, the airport is high on the Highveld, a little lower than OR Tambo but still well above sea level. Thin air and summer heat reduce aircraft performance, so for the heaviest long-range departures the operator checks runway length, temperature and weight on the day. Occasionally, a very long sector at full payload is better flown from OR Tambo's longer runways, or with a technical stop.

Facilities for private passengers

Private passengers use handling facilities designed for business aviation rather than the airline terminal. Several ground handlers and service providers operate at the airport, and the operator chooses the handler for each flight. International flights clear customs and immigration on arrival and before departure. The South African Revenue Service handles customs and the Department of Home Affairs handles immigration.

A few points to prepare for:

• Passports and visas. Requirements vary by nationality. South Africa is strict on passport validity and blank pages.
• Children. South Africa has had specific document rules for minors crossing its borders. Check the current rules before travel.
• Cross-border safari flights. Flights to Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia or Mozambique clear outbound at Lanseria, then enter the destination country at its designated port of entry.

Getting to Lanseria

The map above shows the driving route from the city centre. From Sandton, the drive is typically around 30 to 45 minutes via the northern routes such as the N14 and the R512, depending on traffic. From Fourways and the northern suburbs it is often shorter. Pretoria is also within reach to the north-east.

• Weekday peaks. Morning and evening traffic around Sandton and Fourways can add significant time. Allow margin for fixed departure times.
• Summer storms. Highveld thunderstorms on summer afternoons can slow the roads as well as the flight.
• Nearby attractions. The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and Hartbeespoort Dam are close, so some visitors stay nearby rather than in the city.
• Security. Tell us in advance if you travel with a driver or security team, so vehicle access can be arranged where permitted.
