Berlin Brandenburg Airport for private flights

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER, ICAO EDDB) opened in 2020, south-east of the city at Schönefeld. It replaced both Tegel, the old main airport in the north-west, and the former Schönefeld terminals, so almost all of Berlin's air traffic, private flights included, now uses one airport.

BER is a large airline airport, but private passengers are handled away from the main halls, through a general aviation terminal with its own check-in, security and passport control where needed. The airport takes every size of business aircraft, from turboprops to long-range jets.

Getting there

From the government district, Mitte and the eastern districts, the motorway to BER is usually straightforward. From the western districts, such as Charlottenburg, Grunewald or Potsdam, the drive is longer, and rush-hour traffic on the ring motorway can add a lot of time. Older guides still mention Tegel, which was much closer to the west of the city; it closed to flights in 2020. If you are staying in the west, allow more time than you might expect. Smaller airfields

Around Berlin there are several small general aviation airfields, such as Schönhagen to the south-west. They can suit small turboprops and piston aircraft for short trips, but they are not an alternative for most business jets. Leipzig/Halle, around two hours to the south by road, is a larger airport that operates at night and is sometimes used when BER's night rules rule out a flight. We check alternatives case by case.

BER's night-flight rules

The most important constraint on a private departure from Berlin is the clock. According to the airport's night-flight regulation, there is a night-flight ban between midnight and 5 a.m., with further restrictions in the hours either side. In practice:

• Late evening departures need checking. A flight planned for close to midnight may not be possible, or may need a quieter aircraft.
• Early morning departures before the ban lifts are not possible from BER.
• Delays matter. If an evening flight is delayed and the ban begins, the flight may have to wait until morning or use another airport.

Short hops from Berlin: when to fly and when to take the train

Germany's rail network links Berlin with Hamburg, Leipzig and Frankfurt, and for one traveller going city centre to city centre the train can be as quick as a private flight once the drive to BER is counted. The picture changes quickly with the details:

• Groups. Four or more colleagues travelling together often find a private aircraft competitive once the cost of several first-class tickets and the time saved are counted.
• Awkward destinations. Places without a direct fast train, such as the North Sea islands, smaller business centres or cross-border cities, favour the aircraft.
• Multi-stop days. Two or three meetings in different cities in one day are realistic only by private aircraft.
• Luggage and equipment. Film crews, bands and teams travelling with kit are far easier to move by air.

Berlin's winters are cold, and snow and ice can affect the airport and the roads. De-icing adds time before departure, and fog can cause delays. For ski trips, the Alpine airports (Innsbruck, Salzburg, Zurich, Geneva) are busy on winter weekends and have their own limits on parking and slots. Entry and exit rules

Germany is in the Schengen Area. A flight from Berlin to another Schengen country generally has no exit passport check, though you must carry valid identity documents. Flights to the United Kingdom, Türkiye or elsewhere outside Schengen involve exit checks, and the EU's Entry/Exit System registers many non-EU travellers at the external border.
