Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is a mixed airport. It carries the city's airline traffic and has a separate general aviation area where private flights are handled. The airport was built on the site of the former Bergstrom Air Force Base and replaced the old Mueller airport as Austin's main airport in 1999. It sits about five miles south-east of downtown, and according to the city's aviation department, several fixed base operators provide private terminals, hangars and fuel on the general aviation side.

AUS is also close to the Circuit of the Americas, east of the city, which matters on race weekends. Driving between the two cities on I-35 can take much longer than the distance suggests, especially through the traffic around both cities. Two groups stand out. Dallas is a short hop where a turboprop is efficient. Everything else is a trip of three hours or more, where many travellers prefer a light or midsize jet: it flies faster and higher and has more room for a long flight, at a higher hourly rate. The difference in flight time between a turboprop and a jet grows with distance, so for Los Angeles or Washington it is worth comparing both.

Los Angeles in particular is a common trip for Austin's tech and media travellers. The flight heads west, often into headwinds, so the time can vary by season.

Texas triangle trips and the Hill Country

Austin sits inside the triangle formed by Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, the four largest metro areas in Texas. Houston and San Antonio are even closer to Austin than Dallas, and the drive to either can still take hours once traffic is counted. For a team visiting offices in several Texas cities, a turboprop or light jet can link two or three of them in a day, with the aircraft waiting at each stop. The price of a day like this depends on the total flying time, the waiting time and any positioning, so it is worth planning the stops in one request.

West of the city, the Texas Hill Country draws weekend visitors to ranches, wineries, lake houses on Lake Travis and small towns. Some of those trips start elsewhere and end in Austin; others use small local airfields closer to the property. Summer heat and aircraft performance

Central Texas summers are hot, and heat affects aircraft. On a very hot afternoon, an aircraft may need more runway to take off and may be able to carry less weight, which can limit fuel, passengers or bags on longer trips. Operators calculate this for each flight. In practice, an early-morning departure is often smoother in July and August, and afternoon thunderstorms can also cause short delays.

What decides the price of a private jet from Austin

1. Positioning. If the aircraft is not already in Austin, the hours to bring it in, or to return it afterwards, are usually included in the price.
2. Event demand. On festival and race weekends, demand rises sharply and aircraft may leave and return rather than wait on the ground.
