Puerto Vallarta International Airport, officially named after Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, sits on the bay just north of the city's hotel zone and marina, close to the river that separates Jalisco from Nayarit. It is a busy commercial airport with a heavy winter schedule of flights from the US and Canada. Private aircraft use a separate general aviation area, where passengers clear Mexican immigration and customs on arrival and board directly on departure, without the airline check-in and security lines.

Its position is one of its strengths. Downtown Puerto Vallarta and the Zona Romántica are a short drive south; Nuevo Vallarta is just across the river; and Punta Mita and Sayulita are further north along the bay, often under an hour by road, depending on traffic and exactly where you are staying. Where you stay shapes the trip

Banderas Bay is really several destinations, and each changes the plan slightly.

• Puerto Vallarta old town and the Zona Romántica. The closest to the city's restaurants and galleries, a short drive from the airport, with the most traffic at busy times.
• Marina Vallarta and the hotel zone. Minutes from the airport, convenient for an early departure.
• Nuevo Vallarta. Large resorts and marinas just across the state line, quick to reach from the airport.
• Punta Mita and the northern bay. Gated resorts, golf courses and private villas at the tip of the bay. Most private travellers heading here still fly into Puerto Vallarta and drive.
• Sayulita, San Pancho and the coast beyond. Surf towns and boutique hotels further north; a longer transfer, but still usually easier than any alternative airport.

• Dallas (857 nm): about 3 h 35 min, $11,500 to $20,000.

• Atlanta (1,366 nm): about 5 h 25 min, $17,500 to $30,500.
• Miami (1,410 nm): about 5 h 35 min, $18,000 to $31,500.

In our model, a turboprop has the range for all of these, which keeps the lowest estimate down. On the longer sectors, however, most travellers choose a light, midsize or super midsize jet: it can save well over an hour on a five-hour trip, flies higher and more smoothly, and carries more margin on the routes that cross the Gulf of Mexico or run along the Pacific coast. Operators check winds, payload and fuel reserves on every trip before confirming it.

Mexican rules for a Puerto Vallarta charter

Mexico regulates foreign charter flights closely, and the rules have changed several times. According to Universal Aviation's summary of Mexico's charter permit changes, a foreign operator flying paying passengers into Mexico needs a standing authorisation from the Mexican aviation authority, AFAC; single-entry charter permits are no longer issued; and each flight needs prior approval.

In practice:

• We confirm each operator's Mexican authorisation before we offer an aircraft. An operator without it cannot fly your charter to Puerto Vallarta.
• Allow some lead time. Airport approvals and handling are arranged before the flight, so a same-day departure is possible but less flexible than a domestic US trip. Our last-minute private jet page explains what can be done at short notice.
• Passengers enter Mexico as international travellers, each with a valid passport and meeting the entry rules for their nationality. The operator and the handling agent collect your details before departure.

Flying home to the United States

The return is an international arrival. U.S. Customs and Border Protection requires private and charter flights from abroad to send electronic passenger and crew manifests before departure and to land first at an airport where CBP can clear them. For Texas, the natural gateway is often the destination itself; for other cities, the operator may plan a customs stop and a domestic onward leg. Your part is to send accurate passport details and declare what you bring home.

When to fly to Puerto Vallarta

• November to April. The dry season and the peak for private flights. Snowbirds and second-home owners arrive in autumn and stay for the winter, and humpback whales winter in Banderas Bay. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year and spring break are the busiest weeks.
• May and June. Warmer and quieter, with good availability.
• Summer rains. From around June, afternoon storms become common; mornings are usually the calmest time to fly.
• Hurricane season, 15 May to 30 November. The eastern Pacific season covers the summer and autumn, with most risk in late summer and early autumn. Follow the National Hurricane Center forecasts and keep a fallback plan.
