Orlando's airports for private flights

Orlando International (MCO)

Orlando International Airport is the airport listed in our data and the one most visitors know. It is a large commercial hub south-east of the city, closest to Lake Nona and convenient for the southern side of the tourist district. Private aircraft do use it, through private terminals away from the airline buildings, and for some trips it is the natural choice. But it is built around airline traffic, and at the busiest times of the year that can mean longer taxi times and a larger, busier airport than a private passenger needs.

Orlando Executive (ORL)

Orlando Executive Airport sits about three miles east of downtown Orlando. It is run by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, the same body that runs MCO, and it serves general and corporate aviation as a reliever for the main airport. For travellers based downtown, in Winter Park or in the older neighbourhoods around the lakes, it is often the quickest way into and out of the city by private aircraft.

Sanford and Kissimmee

North of the city, Orlando Sanford International Airport combines airline service with a large amount of general aviation, and suits travellers in the northern suburbs. To the south-west, Kissimmee Gateway Airport is a general aviation airport close to the main tourist district, which can make it convenient for a family staying near the theme parks.

Where you can fly from Orlando

Miami: the short Florida hop

The one corridor in our route table connects Orlando and Miami, 161 nm apart. Atlanta is close enough for a turboprop to feel quick. Beyond about 600 nm, the trips get long for a turboprop, and a light or midsize jet shortens them noticeably because it flies faster and higher. Family trips and the theme parks

A large share of private flights into and out of Orlando are family trips. They have their own logic.

• Luggage and equipment. Strollers, car seats and a week's worth of holiday clothing take a lot of space. A midsize jet's baggage hold is far more forgiving than a light jet's.

Orlando hosts some of the largest conventions and trade shows in the country at the Orange County Convention Center, as well as corporate meetings at the resort hotels, medical and technology businesses around Lake Nona, and a steady flow of executives visiting regional offices.

Orlando's private aviation calendar follows the school year and the convention schedule more than the winter-resident season that shapes South Florida.

• School holidays, including spring break, summer and the end-of-year holidays, bring the most family traffic. Aircraft and popular departure times go first.

• Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to the National Hurricane Center. A storm can close airports and send aircraft out of the area for a day or more, so keep some flexibility if you travel in those months.

Empty legs to and from Orlando

Because so much Orlando traffic is one-way, with families arriving on one day and leaving a week later, aircraft often leave the city empty after a drop-off.
