Málaga Airport for private flights

Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP, ICAO LEMG), run by Aena, is one of Spain's busiest airports and the gateway to the whole coast. It is a large airline airport, but private passengers do not use the main terminal. Business aviation is handled through a separate general aviation terminal, with its own lounge, security and passport control. The airport takes every size of business aircraft, from turboprops to long-range jets.

The airport sits just south-west of Málaga city, beside the coastal motorway. That makes it easy to reach from both the city and the resorts to the west.

From Marbella to the airport

Most private passengers on the Costa del Sol are staying in or around Marbella, Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucía, Benahavís or Estepona. From Marbella, the drive to Málaga Airport usually takes around 40 to 45 minutes on the motorway. From Estepona or Sotogrande, it is longer. Summer traffic, especially on Friday and Sunday afternoons, can add significantly to that.

Two tips:

• Choose the toll motorway where possible. It usually runs more freely than the coastal road in peak season.

Helicopter transfers along the coast are also possible for travellers who want to avoid the road entirely; we can arrange one alongside the flight.

Gibraltar and other alternatives

For travellers staying at the western end of the coast, other airports can sometimes save time.

• Gibraltar. Gibraltar International Airport handles business aviation and is close to Sotogrande and San Roque. It is a British Overseas Territory, outside the Schengen Area, so crossing the land border between Spain and Gibraltar involves passport checks. Its runway is shorter than Málaga's and suits light to midsize jets, but not every aircraft or every trip. Many flights for the western Costa del Sol still use Málaga for its greater capacity.
• Seville and Jerez. These are options for travellers heading inland or to the Atlantic coast of Andalusia.
• Granada. For the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada ski resort, Granada is closer than Málaga, though Málaga's greater range of aircraft often wins.

Madrid is a short domestic hop. London, the single most important trip for many Costa del Sol residents and visitors, is close to four hours in a turboprop in our model; most travellers choose a light, midsize or super midsize jet for that distance because it is faster and far more comfortable. The Costa del Sol seasons

The coast's private traffic has two seasons that overlap.

Summer (June to September) is the peak. Villa owners arrive, Puerto Banús fills with yachts, and families come for the school holidays. Friday and Sunday are the busiest days for private flights, and in July and August the airport's business aviation side is at its busiest. Book early for peak weekends.

Golf season runs through spring, autumn and much of the winter. The Costa del Sol is sometimes called the Costa del Golf, with dozens of courses between Málaga and Sotogrande, and the mild winter draws golfers from northern Europe when their own courses are closed. Winter is otherwise quieter, which makes it an easier time to arrange flights, although residents still travel frequently to London, Madrid and northern Europe.

Málaga city and inland Andalusia

Not every departure starts in Marbella. Málaga itself has grown into a destination of its own, with museums, a busy port for cruise ships and superyachts, and a growing technology sector that brings business travellers to the city. From the centre, the airport is a short drive, and a private departure can be timed around a morning meeting or a late lunch in the old town.

Inland, Andalusia offers trips that combine well with the coast:

• Ronda and the white villages of the Serranía de Ronda are within driving distance of Marbella.
• Granada and the Alhambra make a popular day or overnight trip, by car or by a short flight.
• Seville and Córdoba are reachable by road or high-speed train, and some travellers fly home from Seville after a tour of the region.

Which aircraft suits a flight from the Costa del Sol

• Turboprops suit Madrid, Seville, Ibiza, Mallorca and other short domestic hops.
• Light jets suit trips to Paris, Milan or Lisbon for small groups with modest luggage.

Entry and exit rules

Spain is in the Schengen Area. A flight from Málaga to another Schengen country generally has no exit passport check, although you must carry valid identity documents. Flights to the United Kingdom or anywhere else outside Schengen involve exit checks, as does crossing the land border into Gibraltar, and the EU's Entry/Exit System registers many non-EU travellers at the external border. Many UK residents with homes on the coast are also subject to the Schengen limit on the number of days they can stay without a visa or residence permit. What shapes the price of a private jet from Málaga

Our estimates come from the private jet cost model. The price an operator offers depends on:

1. Positioning. If no suitable aircraft is on the coast, the empty flight in, and sometimes back, is included in the price. In summer, many aircraft are already moving through Málaga.
2. Aircraft category. A larger jet raises the hourly rate but saves time on a flight of three to four hours.
3. Season and day. Summer Fridays and Sundays are the busiest times and have the least choice.
4. Airport. Fees and handling differ between Málaga, Gibraltar and the other Andalusian airports.
5. One-way or return. For a stay of a week or more, two one-way flights are usually more efficient than keeping the aircraft on the ground.

Málaga generates empty legs, especially at the end of summer weekends, when aircraft drop passengers and fly home empty. An empty leg can cost less than a full charter, but the time and route are fixed by the original booking and the flight can be withdrawn.
