Charleston's airports for private flights

Charleston has two airports in our data, and they could hardly be more different.

Charleston International (CHS)

Charleston International Airport in North Charleston is the region's airline hub. It is unusual in one respect: it is a joint civil and military airfield. The runways belong to Joint Base Charleston, and the Charleston County Aviation Authority runs the civilian side under a joint-use agreement, with airline and general aviation areas on different sides of the field. For a private passenger this is mostly invisible: you use a private terminal on the general aviation side, not the airline building, and board close to the car.

CHS suits larger aircraft, trips that start in North Charleston, Summerville or the northern suburbs, and flights that need the facilities of a large airport.

Charleston Executive (JZI)

Charleston Executive Airport is on Johns Island, south-west of the city. It is owned by the Charleston County Aviation Authority, has no airline service and, according to the authority's airport page, sits within minutes of the resort communities of Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island. For a golf trip or a week at a beach house on the islands, it can save a long drive across the city and the bridges.

Charleston Executive suits turboprops and many light and midsize jets. For larger aircraft or a full load of passengers and fuel, the operator checks the airport against the aircraft's performance on your date. We ask for that check before we confirm.

Which airport for your address?

• Kiawah, Seabrook, Johns Island and James Island: Charleston Executive is usually closest.
• The historic peninsula: either can work; it depends on traffic, the aircraft and the time of day.
• Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island and the northern suburbs: CHS is usually more convenient.

These are among the shorter trips of any city on our site. Atlanta and Washington are comfortable in a turboprop or light jet, and even New York, Toronto and Chicago are under three hours in a turboprop. Choosing the aircraft for Charleston's short trips

Because most Charleston trips are short, the usual rule of thumb shifts. On a flight of an hour or two, a larger jet barely saves any time, so the choice comes down to cabin space and luggage rather than speed.

• Two to four people with light bags: a turboprop or light jet is usually the sensible choice, and the saving over a larger aircraft is large.
• A golf foursome or a family with luggage: check the baggage hold first. A roomy turboprop or a midsize jet may be the better fit.
• A wedding party: one larger aircraft, or two smaller ones flying together, depending on the group and the airport.
• Chicago, Toronto or New York for the day: a light or midsize jet shortens the trip and gives you a quieter cabin to work in.

Flying to Toronto and other international trips

Toronto is the one international example in the table. Any flight between Charleston and Canada, or to the Bahamas and the Caribbean, adds a few steps:

• Every passenger needs a valid passport and the documents required to enter the destination country, and the right documents for the return.
• The operator files passenger details with U.S. Customs and Border Protection through eAPIS before leaving and before returning to the United States.
• The return flight must land at an airport where customs clearance is available and arranged in advance. The operator confirms where and when you will clear.

Seasons and weather

Spring is Charleston's high season: mild weather, blooming gardens, wedding season and festivals. Aircraft and hotels book early, especially for weekends.

Autumn is almost as busy, with pleasant weather, weddings and golf.

Summer is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. Morning departures tend to be smoother.

Winter is mild and quieter, a good time for flexible travellers to find availability.

Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to the National Hurricane Center. The South Carolina coast can be affected by tropical storms, which may close airports or move aircraft away for a day or more. What decides the price of a Charleston private jet charter

The estimates above are for the smallest aircraft that can fly each trip nonstop. They are estimates, not quotes. The price you will be offered depends on:

1. Positioning. If the aircraft must fly empty to Charleston to collect you, or back to its base, those hours are usually included. On short trips, positioning can be a large share of the total.
2. Aircraft category. A turboprop or light jet is often enough for Charleston's short trips; a larger aircraft costs more per hour.
3. Airport and fees. Landing, handling and parking charges differ between CHS and Charleston Executive.
4. Dates. Spring and autumn weekends, big wedding weekends and holidays are busiest.

Empty legs and saving money

Weekend traffic creates one-way flights: aircraft drop wedding guests or golfers on Friday and leave empty, then come back empty to collect them on Sunday. Operators sometimes sell these repositioning flights at a lower price. They suit flexible travellers, because the timing and airports are fixed by the original booking and the flight can be withdrawn if a full charter comes along.
