Vienna International Airport for private flights

Vienna International Airport (VIE, ICAO LOWW) is at Schwechat, south-east of the city. It is Austria's main airline hub, but private passengers do not use the airline halls. The airport describes a separate VIP and General Aviation Terminal in the west of the airport grounds, where private flights are handled with their own check-in, security and passport control.

For most travellers, the drive from the city centre is straightforward along the motorway, though rush hour and winter weather can add time. The airport takes every size of business aircraft, from turboprops to long-range jets, which makes it the natural choice for nearly every private departure from the capital.

Getting to Schwechat

The airport lies beyond the city's eastern districts, past the Danube port and the refinery area. From hotels on the Ring or in the inner districts, a car is the simplest option: the driver can take you directly to the general aviation side, where the aircraft is parked a short walk from the lounge. Bratislava as an alternative

Bratislava Airport, in Slovakia, is only around 60 km from Vienna and also has a general aviation terminal. It is rarely needed for a Vienna departure, but it can help if you are staying east of the city, if you have business in Slovakia, or on the rare days when Vienna's slots are tight. Both are Schengen airports, so crossing the border by road is normally simple. We check it when it could save time or cost.

Vienna as a base for Central and Eastern Europe

Vienna's position makes it a natural starting point for trips that are awkward by airline. Many cities to the east and south are close in distance but poorly connected by direct scheduled flights, or served only a few times a day. A private flight can link several of them in one day.

Austria is in the Schengen Area.
