A jet charter Tulum trip starts with a choice most destinations do not offer: fly from the new airport just outside town, or drive up the coast to Cancún, one of the busiest international airports in Mexico. Tulum has changed quickly, from a small town beside a cliff-top Maya site into one of the most sought-after stretches of the Riviera Maya, with boutique hotels along the beach road, villas in the jungle and a year-round calendar of retreats, weddings and festivals. Private flights have followed. This guide explains how to choose between the two airports, what typical trips from the area look like in time and cost, the Mexican rules that shape a charter booking and the seasons to plan around.

Tulum International Airport or Cancún?

The tables above list both airports that serve Tulum in our data.

Tulum International Airport (TQO). The Tulum International Airport, officially named after Felipe Carrillo Puerto, opened at the end of 2023 south-west of the town and began receiving international flights in 2024. It is a new, modern commercial airport with a comparatively light schedule, and it also handles private aircraft. For anyone staying in Tulum itself, along the beach road or further south towards Sian Ka'an and Bacalar, it can cut the ground transfer dramatically.

Cancún International Airport (CUN). Cancún is the established gateway to the region, with a large volume of airline traffic and a separate general aviation area for private flights. From Cancún, the drive to Tulum is roughly two hours along the coastal highway, and longer when traffic builds around Playa del Carmen. Cancún is the natural choice if you are staying in the northern Riviera Maya, combining Tulum with a stop in Cancún, or if your preferred operator is authorised and experienced there.

How we choose between them for your trip:

• Where you are staying. South of Tulum, TQO is usually the obvious answer. Between Playa del Carmen and Akumal, the difference is smaller.
• Operator familiarity and authorisations. Not every operator flies into every Mexican airport regularly. We check what each operator can do before we offer an aircraft.
• Timing. A newer airport with a lighter schedule can be calmer at peak times; a larger airport has more handling capacity and more aircraft nearby for last-minute changes.
• Services. Fuel, handling hours and customs availability can differ between airports, and they change. We confirm them for your date, rather than assuming.

From the aircraft to your villa

The ground transfer is where a Tulum trip is won or lost. A four-hour flight can be followed by a two-hour drive if the airport choice is wrong, or by a short run to the hotel if it is right. A few things help:

• Book the car with the flight. Private aviation areas are usually quieter than airline terminals, and a driver can meet the aircraft or wait just outside. Our private jet with chauffeur service arranges both together.
• Plan around the beach road. Parts of the hotel zone south of the town are narrow and slow, particularly in the evening. Allow for it when you set the departure time on the way home.
• Think about the evening. Arriving in daylight makes the transfer easier and gives the operator more flexibility if the airport's handling hours are limited.
• Keep one bag accessible. Customs inspection on arrival is usually brief, but bags travel in the hold on most smaller aircraft.

Typical trips from the Tulum area, as estimates

All these routes cross the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean. Our model shows a turboprop can fly them nonstop, but on the long over-water sectors operators plan extra fuel reserves and often recommend a light or midsize jet for speed, comfort and margin. Each trip is checked by the operator before it is confirmed. A jet also shortens a five-hour flight to the Midwest noticeably.

Mexican rules that shape a Tulum charter

Mexico has tightened its rules for foreign charter flights. According to Universal Aviation's overview of Mexico's charter permit changes, a foreign operator carrying paying passengers into Mexico now needs a standing authorisation from the Mexican aviation authority, AFAC, and single-entry charter permits are no longer issued. Every flight also needs prior authorisation.

For a traveller, three practical points follow:

1. Check the operator, not only the aircraft. We only present aircraft from operators with the right Mexican authorisation. An attractive price from an operator without it is not a real option.
2. Leave a little more lead time. Permits, airport authorisations and handling are arranged before the flight. Same-day trips are possible but less flexible. See our last-minute private jet page for what can be done at short notice.
3. Enter as an international traveller. Every passenger needs a valid passport and must meet Mexico's entry rules for their nationality. The operator and handling agent collect your details in advance.

The flight home to the United States

Returning from Tulum to the US is an international arrival. U.S. Customs and Border Protection's general aviation rules require private and charter flights from abroad to send electronic passenger and crew manifests before departure and to land first at an airport where CBP can clear them. That usually means a nonstop flight to a US gateway with customs facilities, or a first stop there before continuing within the US. The operator handles the filings; you send accurate passport details and declare what you bring home.

When to fly to Tulum

• December to April. The dry season and the peak for private flights, with the busiest weeks at Christmas, New Year and in the February and March school holidays. Villas and aircraft both go early.
• Festival and wellness weekends. Tulum hosts music events, retreats and weddings through the winter. Those weekends can fill both airports' private aviation areas.
• May to early summer. Warmer, quieter and often better value.
• Hurricane season, 1 June to 30 November. The Yucatán coast is exposed to Atlantic storms. Most days are flyable, but a storm can close airports and disperse aircraft. Keep an eye on the National Hurricane Center and allow a fallback date from August to October.

Heat and humidity reduce aircraft performance on long sectors. For a full aircraft to the Northeast or the Midwest, an early departure often helps.

Choosing an aircraft for a Tulum trip

• Turboprops suit shorter hops, regional connections within Mexico and cost-conscious trips to Florida, with a smaller cabin.
• Light jets carry four to six passengers comfortably to Florida and Texas.
• Midsize and super midsize jets suit the East Coast, the Midwest and families with a week's luggage; their longer range gives margin over water.
• Heavy jets fit larger groups, wedding parties and long trips from the West Coast, Canada or Europe.

What decides the price of a jet charter from Tulum

1. Positioning. Most aircraft are based in the US, and empty flights to collect you or return home are usually included in the price.
2. Airport. Using Tulum can reduce your drive; if fewer authorised operators fly there regularly, Cancún may offer more choice.
3. Category. Larger jets cost more per hour but save time on the longer sectors.
4. Season. Holiday weeks and festival weekends carry the highest demand.

Much leisure flying to the Riviera Maya is one way, so aircraft often return to the US empty. Operators sometimes sell those repositioning flights at a lower price; they suit flexible travellers, because the timing and airports are fixed and the flight can be withdrawn if the aircraft is chartered in full.
