Salt Lake City International for private flights

Salt Lake City International Airport, known by its code SLC, is the airport in our data. It lies a few miles west of downtown, between the city and the Great Salt Lake, and it is a major airline hub. For most travellers, SLC's location is its strength. Downtown is a short drive away, and the interstates east towards Park City and south towards the Cottonwood canyons start close by. Airports closer to the mountains

For travellers staying in Park City or Deer Valley, a smaller airport in the Heber Valley, Heber Valley Airport, is closer to the resorts than SLC. It is outside our airport data, so it does not appear in the table above, and it is a high-elevation field in a mountain valley, which means not every aircraft can use it with a full load in every season. Ski season: Salt Lake City's busiest private months

From December to April, private flights in and out of Salt Lake City are dominated by skiers.

• Weekends and holidays are busiest. Christmas, New Year, Presidents' Day weekend and spring break bring the heaviest traffic. Aircraft and parking become scarce, and prices rise.

Salt Lake City has a weather feature that surprises many visitors: the winter inversion. On calm winter days, cold air settles in the valley under a layer of warmer air, trapping haze and sometimes fog. Visibility at the airport can drop for days at a time while the mountains above are in bright sunshine. Other factors to know:

• Lake-effect snow. The Great Salt Lake can generate bands of heavy snow over parts of the valley and the mountains.
• Altitude. SLC sits at over 4,000 feet, and the mountain airports are higher. Thinner air reduces aircraft performance, especially on hot summer days, so operators may limit weight or plan a fuel stop on long trips.
• Summer storms. Afternoon thunderstorms over the Wasatch are common in summer; morning departures are usually smoother.
