Mykonos Airport (JMK, ICAO LGMK) sits a few kilometres south-east of Mykonos Town. It is run by Fraport Greece and has a single runway shared by airline flights, turboprops and business jets. The airport is compact: the terminal, the apron and the road outside were built for a much smaller island than the Mykonos of today.

For private travellers, that has three practical effects.

Parking is the real constraint

Aircraft parking space on the apron is limited, and in the high season it goes to airlines first. The airport's own general and business aviation page states that business aviation flights need prior permission for apron parking. Industry guides, such as Universal Weather's Mykonos briefing, describe short permitted ground times in summer and say overnight parking is rarely available. In practice, the jet that brought you to the island has usually flown away the same day.

Your departing aircraft often comes from elsewhere

Because aircraft cannot wait on the island, your departure normally starts with a positioning flight: the jet flies in empty from Athens, another island or its home base, collects you and leaves. That empty sector is part of the cost of the trip, and its timing depends on a slot at both ends. Which aircraft suits a Mykonos departure

Choosing an aircraft for Mykonos is partly about the destination and partly about the island itself.

Turboprops handle short island hops and the flight to Athens well. They are economical on short sectors and comfortable for small groups with light bags.

Light jets are a common choice for Mykonos to Milan, Munich or Paris for up to about six passengers. Cabin space and baggage are limited, so soft bags work better than hard cases.

Midsize and super midsize jets suit families and groups of friends with more luggage, and longer flights to London or the Gulf. The larger cabin makes a five-hour flight far more comfortable.

The island's private traffic is almost entirely leisure, with a few patterns that repeat every summer.

• Villa holidays. Families and groups arrive on a Saturday or Sunday and leave a week later. Luggage and children's equipment often decide the aircraft.

Getting to the airport on departure day

Mykonos is small, but the roads are narrow and summer traffic around the town and the port can be heavy, especially in the early evening. Allow more time than the distance suggests. Entry and exit rules

Greece is in the Schengen Area. A flight from Mykonos to another Schengen country, such as Italy, Germany or France, is a Schengen flight, so there are normally no exit passport checks, though you must still carry valid identity documents. A flight to the United Kingdom, Türkiye, the Gulf or anywhere else outside Schengen means exit checks on departure. The EU's Entry/Exit System registers many non-EU travellers at the external border, so allow time for it where it applies. Mykonos produces empty legs in summer, because so many aircraft drop passengers and leave empty. If your dates and times are flexible, one of those repositioning flights can cost less than a full charter. The catch is that the time and route are set by someone else's booking, and the flight can be withdrawn if the aircraft is sold as a full trip.
