Key West has a single, relatively short runway surrounded by water, and that decides which aircraft can use it, with how many passengers and how much fuel. Key West International Airport for private flights

Key West International Airport is the island's airport and the one listed in our data. It is a mixed airport, with airline flights from a small passenger terminal and a private aviation side for charter and private aircraft. It sits on the eastern side of the island, a short drive from Old Town, the marinas and most of the hotels and guest houses, which is one of the pleasures of flying here: you can be at your accommodation within minutes of landing.

Why the runway matters

A short runway at sea level is not a problem for every aircraft, but it is a limit for some. The factors that decide what an aircraft can do on a given day include:

• Temperature. Hot air reduces engine and wing performance. On a summer afternoon an aircraft needs more runway than on a cool winter morning.
• Weight. More passengers, more luggage and more fuel all increase the runway needed. On a long trip, fuel is the biggest variable.
• Wet runway and wind. Rain and a tailwind both lengthen the distance required to stop or take off.

For a larger jet, these factors can mean the operator has to carry fewer passengers or less fuel out of Key West, and then stop for fuel on the way. For turboprops and most light and midsize jets, the runway is generally less of a constraint. Either way, the calculation is the operator's responsibility, made for your aircraft, your load and your date. We ask for it before we confirm anything, so there are no surprises on the day.

Marathon, and the Miami option

The Keys have a second main airport, Florida Keys Marathon International Airport, in the Middle Keys. If you are staying in Marathon, Islamorada or elsewhere in the Middle or Upper Keys, it can be closer than Key West. Whether it suits a given aircraft is again a question for the operator.

For a large group or a long-range trip in a heavy jet, another approach is to fly the long sector into Miami or another mainland airport and connect to Key West in a turboprop or light jet, or by car. It adds a step, but it lets each aircraft do what it does well.

Which aircraft suit Key West

For most Key West trips, the natural choices are:

• Turboprops. Our model finds that a turboprop is the smallest category able to fly every example trip below nonstop. Turboprops are at home on shorter runways and are usually the lowest-cost option. They are slower than jets, which matters on a four-hour trip.
• Light jets. Faster than a turboprop and comfortable for up to about six or seven passengers on a short or medium trip. Baggage space is limited, which matters for fishing gear or diving equipment.
• Midsize jets. More cabin, more luggage, and a stand-up cabin in some models. A good choice for longer trips, if the operator confirms the runway performance for your load.

The Key West seasons

Winter and spring are the high season, with dry weather, comfortable temperatures and the most visitors. Demand for flights peaks around the end-of-year holidays and spring break, and hotels, marina berths and aircraft all book up. Plan early.

Summer is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Heat also affects aircraft performance on the island's runway, as explained above, so a morning departure can make life easier for both the weather and the payload.

Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to the National Hurricane Center. The Keys are exposed to tropical storms, and a storm can lead to evacuations, closed airports and aircraft moved to the mainland. If you travel in those months, stay flexible and follow official forecasts and local emergency guidance.

Autumn brings festivals and a slower pace. Events on the island can fill accommodation for a weekend, so check the local calendar when you choose dates.

What decides the cost of a Key West private jet charter

1. Positioning. Few aircraft are based in Key West itself. Most charters involve an aircraft flying down from the mainland to collect you, and those hours are usually included in the price.
2. Aircraft category. Jets cost more per hour than turboprops, but save time on long trips.
3. Runway and payload. If a larger aircraft needs a fuel stop because of weight limits on departure, that adds time and cost.
