Jacksonville International Airport is the city's airline hub, on the north side of town. For many private trips starting on the east side of the river, it is the more convenient choice: less driving, no airline traffic and an airport that runs at the pace of business aviation.

Cecil and nearby airports

Cecil Airport, a former naval air station on the west side of the city, is another general aviation option, used today for aircraft maintenance and business aviation. Outside the city, the airports at St. Augustine to the south and Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island to the north can suit some trips, especially for smaller aircraft. As a rough guide: the beaches, Ponte Vedra and the Southside often point to Craig; the northern suburbs and Amelia Island to JAX; the west side to Cecil. Ponte Vedra Beach, just south-east of the city, is home to TPC Sawgrass and hosts one of professional golf's biggest events each spring. Spring and autumn are the busiest leisure seasons, with golf, resort weekends and events on the coast. The big spring golf week fills private terminals and hotels around Ponte Vedra, so book early if your trip overlaps it.

Winter is mild compared with most of the country, and Jacksonville sees visitors and part-time residents from the North, though less of the pure winter-resident traffic of South Florida.

Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. Morning departures usually run more smoothly.

Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to the National Hurricane Center. North Florida is less often hit than the south of the state, but storms do affect the area and can close airports or move aircraft away for a day or more. Keep some flexibility in those months.
