Hong Kong International Airport for private jets

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) at Chek Lap Kok, on reclaimed land off Lantau Island, is the only practical airport for business jets in Hong Kong itself. It now operates a three-runway system and handles a very large volume of passenger and cargo flights around the clock.

Private flights use a dedicated business aviation centre, with its own lounges, immigration and customs, and direct access to the aircraft. Passengers do not pass through the main terminal. Slots and parking

The key constraint is capacity. Business aviation flights at HKIA need confirmed slots for arrival and departure, and parking for business jets is limited. In practice this means:

• Timing may need to flex. The exact time you want may not be available; a shift of an hour can solve it.
• The aircraft may not stay. On a trip of several days, the aircraft may drop you and reposition to another airport, then return to collect you. That extra flying is part of the price.
• Late changes are harder. Moving a departure at short notice depends on slot availability. Tell us early if your plans may change.

Alternatives: Macau and Shenzhen

When HKIA is full, or for some itineraries, nearby airports can help. Macau International Airport is across the Pearl River estuary, connected to Hong Kong by ferry, road bridge and helicopter. Shenzhen, on the mainland, is a large airport close to the border. Both can serve as a base for aircraft parking or as the airport for a trip. Using a mainland airport means passengers need the right Chinese entry documents, and flights there follow mainland rules. We look at these options case by case.

Singapore

Hong Kong to Singapore, 1,385 nm across the South China Sea, links Asia's two main financial centres. Our pricing model estimates about 5 h 30 min in the air and a one-way range of roughly $17,500 to $31,000, with a turboprop as the smallest category that can make it nonstop. For a flight of this length over water, operators often use a jet, which is faster and carries more reserves; every trip is checked by the operator against the weather and the aircraft's performance. A light or midsize jet is the typical choice for a small group. Sydney

Hong Kong to Sydney, 3,993 nm, is a long overnight-length flight over the ocean and needs a heavy jet in our model to fly nonstop. Heavy and ultra long range jets are fewer, and their availability in the region varies, so give us as much notice as possible. As with any long over-water flight, the operator plans fuel reserves and alternates carefully, and may choose a larger aircraft than the minimum. Getting to the airport

Chek Lap Kok is on the western side of the territory, away from the business districts. From Central or Tsim Sha Tsui the drive crosses the Tsing Ma bridge and follows the expressway along North Lantau; in normal traffic it is a comfortable run, but rush hours, cross-harbour tunnels and bad weather can add a lot of time. Because the business aviation centre is separate from the main terminals, your car goes to a different entrance from airline passengers, and the driver needs the right address. Typhoon season and weather

Hong Kong's typhoon season runs through the summer and early autumn. When a tropical cyclone approaches, the Hong Kong Observatory issues numbered warning signals; at the higher signals, airport operations can be heavily disrupted and flights delayed or cancelled. Private flights are no exception, and the operator will not fly if conditions are unsafe.

• Keep an eye on the forecast for a few days before you fly, and stay in touch with us.
• Be ready to move a departure earlier or later to avoid the storm.
• Allow extra time for ground travel, which can also be disrupted.

Outside typhoon season, the cooler months from autumn to spring are the most comfortable for travel and are also the busiest for conferences, events and year-end trips. The Lunar New Year is a peak period for family travel across Asia; book early if your trip falls then.

Entering and leaving Hong Kong

Private flight passengers clear immigration and customs at the business aviation centre, quickly and privately, but the same rules apply as on an airline. Many nationalities can visit Hong Kong without a visa for a set period; others need one. Check the current rules for every passenger with the Immigration Department of the Hong Kong SAR before you book. Hong Kong has its own immigration system, separate from mainland China: a trip that continues to the mainland needs the right Chinese documents.

What drives the price of a private jet from Hong Kong
