Connecticut private jets: how private flying works across the state

Connecticut private jets serve two quite different markets. In the southwest, Greenwich, Stamford and the rest of Fairfield County are home to hedge funds, family offices and corporate headquarters, and their private flights mostly use Westchester County Airport just across the New York line, or Danbury. In the center of the state, Hartford's insurance and aerospace industries, the universities and the Connecticut River valley are served by Bradley International, north of the city. The two markets are an hour or more apart by road, so the first question for any Connecticut trip is simple: where exactly are you starting?

Airports for Connecticut private jets

Bradley International Airport (BDL): Hartford and central Connecticut

Bradley International is Connecticut's main commercial airport, in Windsor Locks about 12 miles north of Hartford. It is owned and run by the Connecticut Airport Authority, a state agency created in 2011. Bradley has airline service and general aviation facilities for private aircraft.

For travelers in Hartford, West Hartford, the Farmington Valley and north toward Springfield, Massachusetts, Bradley is the natural airport. Its runways suit everything from turboprops to large long-range jets, and as an airline airport it is used to international arrivals. Airline traffic means there can be short waits at peak times, but it is far less congested than the New York airports.

Westchester County Airport (HPN): Greenwich and Stamford

Although it is in New York State, Westchester County Airport is the main private aviation airport for Fairfield County. The state line runs along its eastern boundary, and the airport notes that it serves Fairfield County as well as Westchester. Most of its traffic is general aviation, much of it business jets.

From Greenwich, the drive is short; from Stamford or Darien, it is usually less than half an hour outside rush hour. Westchester asks operators to avoid flying between midnight and 6:30 am under a voluntary restraint program, so very late departures and arrivals are discouraged. Ramp space and terminal capacity are also limited, which can affect busy weekends.

Danbury Municipal Airport (DXR): northern Fairfield County

Danbury Municipal is a city-owned airport used mainly by general and business aviation, with no airline service. It suits travelers in Danbury, Ridgefield, New Canaan, Wilton and the towns of northern Fairfield and western Litchfield counties. It is smaller than Westchester and suits turboprops, light jets and many midsize jets; the operator checks the runway and weather for larger aircraft and heavy loads.

Other Connecticut airports

The Connecticut Airport Authority also runs five general aviation airports: Hartford-Brainard, near downtown Hartford; Groton-New London on the southeast coast; Waterbury-Oxford; Danielson; and Windham. Flights from Fairfield County cover similar distances to most destinations, but the starting airport and positioning can change the price. On trips over two or three hours, most travelers choose a light, midsize or super midsize jet, which flies faster and higher and can cut an hour or more from the longer trips. Where Connecticut travelers fly

Florida in winter. Palm Beach, Naples and Miami are the main winter routes, especially from Fairfield County. From December to April, and particularly around the holidays and school breaks, aircraft for Florida are booked early.

The islands and New England coast in summer. Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, the Hamptons and Maine are short flights; they are busiest on Friday and Sunday afternoons.

Summer. Short island flights dominate weekends. Coastal fog can affect the islands, and afternoon thunderstorms are common.

Autumn. Foliage season and a busy business calendar. Generally good flying weather.

Choosing the aircraft for Connecticut private jets

Most Connecticut trips are short, so the choice is about the cabin more than range.

• Turboprops are economical for the islands, Boston and Washington, and they can use smaller airports such as Hartford-Brainard.

What drives the price of private jet charter in Connecticut

Empty legs and flexible options

Because so many aircraft move between the New York area, Florida and the islands, empty repositioning flights pass through Connecticut regularly.
