Private jet routes from Midway
Private jet Chicago Midway: the city's close-in airport for private flights
A private jet Chicago Midway arrival lands you closer to the Loop than any other major airport in the region. Chicago Midway International Airport (ICAO KMDW, IATA MDW) sits on Chicago's South West Side, owned by the City of Chicago and run by the Chicago Department of Aviation. Wikipedia's entry on the airport describes a compact field of roughly a square mile, hemmed in on all sides by city streets and homes. It is a busy airline airport, dominated by Southwest Airlines, and it also has an established business aviation side used by companies and private travellers who want to be downtown fast.
The facts panel and widgets above show MDW's codes, live weather, the driving route from the city centre and the corridors that use it. This guide covers the rest: how private flights actually work at Midway, what its compact size means for your aircraft, how winter changes the plan, and when O'Hare, Chicago Executive, DuPage or Gary makes more sense.
We are a charter broker. We don't own or operate aircraft; we compare options from licensed operators, help you choose the airport, and stay with the trip until you land. Read more about how we work on the JetPriceCheck homepage.
How private flights work at Midway
Private aircraft at Midway don't use the airline concourses. They park at a fixed-base operator (FBO), a company licensed by the airport to handle non-airline aircraft. The Chicago Department of Aviation lists the FBOs serving the airport on its Midway FBO page. Each runs its own lounge, ramp, fuel and ground crew.
Departing from an FBO
You drive to the FBO, not the terminal. A staff member checks your name against the manifest, your bags are loaded directly, and the crew meets you in the lounge. There is no airline security line and no gate; the door closes when your group is aboard.
Arriving at an FBO
After landing, the aircraft taxis to the FBO ramp. The crew opens the door, luggage is unloaded, and your car waits at the lounge entrance or, where allowed, close to the aircraft. From there the Loop is a short drive up the Stevenson Expressway, traffic permitting.
Sharing a compact airfield
Because Midway is busy with airline flights and has little room to grow, private flights fit around the schedule. At peak times you may see a short wait for departure or a slightly longer taxi. We ask the operator about timing constraints when we quote.
What Midway's size means for your aircraft
Midway's runways are shorter than those at the region's largest airports, because the airport is boxed in by the city. For most private trips that makes no difference: light, midsize and super midsize jets use Midway every day. It matters for the heaviest missions.
- Short and medium trips. A light jet to Detroit or a midsize jet to New York is well within what Midway handles routinely.
- Long-range departures at heavy weight. A large-cabin jet leaving for Europe with full fuel, or on a wet or icy day, may need a longer runway than Midway can offer. In that case, the operator may suggest O'Hare, DuPage or Gary/Chicago instead, or a fuel stop.
- Winter conditions. Snow and ice reduce braking performance, which increases the runway an aircraft needs. Operators run these numbers for each flight.
The operator always confirms runway performance for your aircraft, load and weather before a flight is confirmed. You don't need to know the numbers; you just need to know that the question is being asked, and we make sure it is.
Midway, O'Hare or a business aviation airport? Choosing in Chicago
Chicago has one of the widest choices of private jet airports in the country. The right one depends on where you are going and the size of the aircraft.
| Airport | Type | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| Chicago Midway (MDW) | Airline and business aviation | The Loop, the South Loop, the West Loop, the South Side, McCormick Place |
| O'Hare International (ORD) | Major airline hub | Rosemont, the north-west suburbs, large long-range jets |
| Chicago Executive (PWK) | Business aviation | The North Shore, Northbrook, Deerfield, Wheeling |
| DuPage (DPA) | Business aviation | Oak Brook, Naperville, the western suburbs, larger jets |
| Gary/Chicago (GYY) | Business aviation, Indiana | Northwest Indiana, the south-east side, larger jets |
| Waukegan National (UGN) | Business aviation | Lake County, the far North Shore |
The honest rule: Midway usually wins for downtown and the South Side, Chicago Executive for the northern suburbs, and DuPage for the western corridor. DuPage Airport is often chosen by operators of larger jets because of its longer runway. O'Hare handles anything, but airline traffic is so heavy that private flights usually go elsewhere unless the address or aircraft demands it.
Getting from Midway into Chicago
Midway's selling point is its proximity to the city. The Loop is about ten miles to the north-east, a straight run up the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) in normal traffic. The map above shows the driving route from the city centre.
A chauffeured car is the standard transfer, arranged by the operator or the FBO. Rush hour on the Stevenson and the Dan Ryan can stretch the drive, and a big event at McCormick Place or Soldier Field adds traffic near the lakefront. For a fixed meeting time, build in a margin and tell us about it when you ask for a quote.
Who flies private through Midway
Financial and legal travellers heading to the Loop. Traders, bankers, lawyers and consultants with meetings downtown value Midway's short drive above almost everything else.
Convention and trade show visitors. McCormick Place is one of the largest convention centres in North America, and Midway is the natural airport for it.
East Coast shuttles. New York and Chicago are linked by a steady flow of business travellers. The New York to Chicago route shows flight times and aircraft; many New York trips start at Teterboro.
Midwest regional trips. Detroit, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Milwaukee are short hops where a light jet or turboprop fits.
Routes from Chicago
The routes section above lists the corridors that use Midway in our data. The flagship is New York, where midsize and super midsize jets are the common choice. Beyond our corridor list, an operator can quote any trip from Midway: Florida in winter, the Rockies for skiing, the West Coast for business, or Europe on a long-range jet from an airport with the runway to suit. Browse the full directory of charter routes, and see our aircraft guide to match the aircraft to the trip.
Choosing an aircraft for a Midway trip
The route and the group decide the aircraft; Midway simply sets a ceiling on the heaviest departures.
- Turboprops suit the shortest Midwest hops, such as Milwaukee or Indianapolis, with a small group and modest luggage.
- Light jets are the everyday choice for Detroit, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Nashville, and they can reach the East Coast with a light load.
- Midsize and super midsize jets fit New York, Florida and Texas trips, with a roomier cabin, more luggage space and the range to fly nonstop in a winter headwind.
- Large-cabin jets come into play for bigger groups and long-range missions. For those, the operator checks whether Midway works on the day or whether another Chicago airport is the smarter departure point.
Mention skis, golf bags or bulky cases when you ask for a quote. Luggage space varies more between models than seat counts suggest, and in winter the extra weight of coats and gear adds up.
Flying private in a Chicago winter
Chicago winters shape private flying more than in most US cities. Snow, ice and lake-effect storms off Lake Michigan can arrive quickly. What that means in practice:
- De-icing adds time. On a cold morning, the aircraft may need de-icing before departure. It is routine, but it can add a significant wait on a busy day, so allow extra time.
- Hangar space helps. An aircraft kept in a hangar overnight needs less de-icing in the morning. If your trip involves an overnight stay, ask whether the operator plans to hangar the aircraft.
- Snow removal can pause operations. When the airport clears runways, departures and arrivals can stop briefly.
- Runway performance changes. As above, contaminated runways increase the distance an aircraft needs, which can affect which airport or how much fuel.
Operators and FBOs in Chicago are used to all of this, and winter trips run smoothly with realistic timing. Tell us if you have a hard deadline, and the operator will plan the margin.
Customs and international flights
Our data does not yet confirm U.S. Customs and Border Protection arrangements for private arrivals at Midway. For an international arrival, the operator will confirm where the flight can clear customs, which may be Midway, another Chicago-area airport, or a first stop elsewhere in the United States. The CBP private flyers guidance explains the general process, including advance passenger information.
For departures to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Europe, bring valid passports and check the destination's entry rules. Send names and passport details early so the operator can file the manifest in time.
Seasonality and busy periods
Chicago's private aviation market is busy year-round on weekdays, driven by business travel. Peaks come with major conventions and trade shows, big sporting events and summer festivals in the parks along the lakefront. Winter brings a burst of departures to Florida, the Caribbean and the ski resorts, particularly around the holidays. We don't publish exact event dates; check organisers' calendars for your year.
In the busiest weeks, FBO parking and nearby aircraft fill up. Booking early keeps the choice of aircraft and airport open.
Summer has its own pattern. Thunderstorms build over the Midwest on hot afternoons and can hold departures or force reroutes, so a morning slot is often the calmer choice. Summer weekends also bring heavy leisure traffic north to Wisconsin and Michigan lake country, where many travellers fly into small regional airports; the operator confirms that the destination field suits the aircraft.
What a private jet from Midway costs
The cost of a private jet from Chicago Midway depends mainly on the aircraft, the flight time and where the aircraft is based. Airport-specific costs include landing, handling and FBO fees, which rise with aircraft size, plus hangar space and de-icing in winter, which can add noticeably to a cold-weather trip.
Our private jet cost guide explains how estimates are built, and route pages show estimate ranges by aircraft category. They come from our demonstration pricing model and are not quotes; a firm price comes from a licensed operator for a specific aircraft and date.
Empty legs through Chicago
Chicago sits at the centre of the country's aviation map, so repositioning flights through the city are frequent, particularly to and from New York, Florida and the West Coast. These one-way empty legs are cheaper, but the timing is set by the original booking and can change. Our empty-leg flights page explains how they work.
