Getting to Big Sky from Bozeman

Big Sky Resort, the Yellowstone Club, Spanish Peaks and Moonlight Basin all sit at the top of Gallatin Canyon, about 45 miles south of the airport. The drive follows US Route 191 along the Gallatin River and usually takes around an hour, sometimes more in winter.

A few practical points:

• Winter roads. The canyon road is scenic but narrow and busy, and snow can slow it considerably. Build extra time into your arrival and departure days, and don't schedule a tight flight time right after a morning on the mountain.

Seasons: ski winters and busy summers

Bozeman has two peaks, and they need different planning.

Winter (December to early April). Skiing at Big Sky, Moonlight Basin and the Yellowstone Club drives most private traffic, with the heaviest days around Christmas, New Year, Presidents' Day and the spring break weeks. On those days, parking space for aircraft can be tight. Aircraft often drop passengers and fly on, then return to collect them, which affects both schedule and price. Summer (June to September). Yellowstone, fly-fishing on the Gallatin, Madison and Yellowstone rivers, golf, hiking and ranch holidays bring a second wave of visitors. Days are long and mostly dry, but on hot afternoons aircraft performance is reduced, which can limit how much a smaller aircraft carries or how far it flies nonstop. Morning departures often work better. Wildfire smoke can reduce visibility in late summer.
