Most operators ask passengers to arrive about 20 to 30 minutes before departure. On arrival, you can often be in your car or helicopter within a quarter of an hour of the doors opening.

Customs and border rules

France is in the Schengen Area, so flights from Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Milan, Madrid or Ibiza normally arrive without passport control, although you should carry a passport or national ID card. Flights from the United Kingdom, the United States, the Gulf and other non-Schengen countries clear border control in the business aviation terminal.

The real value of a private jet on the Riviera is how fast you reach your final address. Nice airport is close to the city, but most private travellers are heading somewhere else on the coast.

Monaco by helicopter

Monaco has no airport of its own, so Nice is its airport. The Principality's official tourism site, Visit Monaco, describes Nice as the main air gateway and the helicopter as the fastest link. The flight to the Monaco Heliport at Fontvieille takes only a few minutes along the coast, and the airport describes a regular helicopter line to Monaco operated by Monacair with frequent departures through the day. Private helicopter charters are also available if you want to leave the moment your jet lands.

Monaco by road

By car, the drive follows the coastal roads or the A8 motorway. Outside peak times it is quick, but in summer and during events it can stretch well beyond an hour. If you are arriving during the Grand Prix or the Yacht Show, we usually suggest a helicopter.

Cannes, Antibes and the west

Cannes and Antibes are a straightforward drive west of the airport along the A8. For Cannes, some travellers use Cannes-Mandelieu Airport instead; see the section below on alternatives.

Saint-Tropez

Saint-Tropez is further along the coast. The drive from Nice can take a long time in summer traffic, so many visitors combine the jet arrival at Nice with a helicopter to the Saint-Tropez peninsula or use the smaller La Môle airfield for the final leg.

The Alps and Italy

In winter, Nice also works as a gateway to the southern Alps, and throughout the year it links easily to the Italian Riviera by road.

Nice versus the smaller Riviera airfields

Nice is not the only airport on the Côte d'Azur that takes private aircraft. Choosing between them depends on your aircraft, your destination and the season.

Cannes-Mandelieu

Cannes-Mandelieu Airport is a small business aviation airfield just west of Cannes. It is convenient for Cannes itself and the western Riviera, but it has a much shorter runway than Nice and strict rules on aircraft size and noise. It suits light jets, some midsize jets and turboprops; larger jets usually land at Nice instead. Opening hours are more limited too.

La Môle–Saint-Tropez

La Môle is a small airfield near Saint-Tropez with a short runway and tight operating rules. Only specific aircraft and approved crews fly there, and it is busy and highly seasonal in summer. For most jets, the practical option is to land in Nice and connect by helicopter or car.

Why Nice is the default

For medium and large jets, long-range aircraft, late arrivals, and any flight from outside Europe, Nice is the practical choice. It handles every jet category, has customs on site, and has the helicopter links that make the rest of the coast easy. The operator confirms runway performance, parking and timing for each flight.

When Nice gets busy

The Riviera is highly seasonal, and the airport feels it. These are the periods that need the most planning.

The Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix

Both events usually fall in May, sometimes back to back. Demand for aircraft, parking and helicopter seats rises sharply, and business aviation parking at Nice can fill up. Many aircraft drop passengers and fly on to park at another airport, which adds positioning cost. If you plan to fly to either event, book as early as possible and be flexible by a few hours on arrival time.

Summer

From June to early September, the Riviera fills with leisure travellers, yachts and villa guests. Weekends are the busiest days, with strong demand from Paris, London, Geneva, Zurich and further afield. Parking and handling capacity can be tight.

The Monaco Yacht Show

Held in September, the Yacht Show brings another wave of arrivals, often from the Gulf, the United States and Northern Europe.

Winter

Outside the event calendar, winter is quieter and prices can be lower. It is a good time for business trips, property viewings and off-season stays.

Practical tips for a Nice arrival

A few details make a Riviera trip smoother:

• Share your final address early. Whether you are going to a Monaco apartment, a Cap Ferrat villa or a yacht in Antibes decides whether a car or helicopter is the better link, and helicopters need passenger weights and baggage details in advance.
• Mind the baggage limits on helicopters. Helicopter cabins are small. Large suitcases, golf bags and skis may travel separately by car.
• Allow for the weather. Coastal fog and strong winds are uncommon but can pause helicopter flights, so keep a car on standby for important connections.
• Plan your return early in peak weeks. After the Grand Prix and on summer Sunday evenings, many aircraft leave at the same time, so confirm your return departure when you book the outbound.
