Milwaukee: Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is the state's largest airport, on the south side of Milwaukee. It is an airline airport with separate private aviation facilities, so passengers on a charter do not use the airline terminal. For travellers starting downtown, in the Third Ward, on the south shore or in the southern suburbs, it is usually the shortest drive.

The Milwaukee area also has smaller general aviation airports to the north and west, useful for travellers in the North Shore suburbs or in Waukesha County. Madison: Dane County Regional Airport

Dane County Regional Airport serves Madison and the surrounding region from the north-east side of the city. It is an airline airport that also handles private flights and shares the field with a military unit. For anyone in Madison, Middleton or the western half of the state, it is the natural starting point.

Choosing between them

For most travellers, the answer is simply the closer airport. Milwaukee and Madison are around an hour and a half apart by road, so driving from one to the other rarely makes sense for a private flight. The exceptions are when a particular aircraft is based at one airport, which can reduce the positioning cost, or when you are travelling with a group spread across both cities. In those cases we compare the whole journey, not just the flight.

From Madison, which lies further west, the eastbound trips are a little longer and the Dallas trip a little shorter, so expect similar figures with small differences either way.

A few notes on the table:

• Toronto is international. On the return you clear US Customs and Border Protection at an airport with customs facilities, and the operator files passenger information in advance.
• Washington can involve extra security procedures when landing close to the capital; the operator handles them.
• New York and Boston are where a light jet starts to pay off, trimming a noticeable amount of time from a turboprop's nearly three-hour flight.

Flying within Wisconsin and the upper Midwest

Some of the most useful private flights in Wisconsin are short ones that never leave the region.

Lake country and the Northwoods. Families with lake houses in the north of the state, or across the border in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, often fly from Milwaukee, Madison or Chicago to small regional airports near the cabin. A drive of four or five hours becomes an hour in the air. These airports are small, so a turboprop is often the right aircraft; the operator confirms runway suitability for each trip.

Door County. The peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan is a summer favourite. Flying saves a long drive up the lakeshore, especially on summer Fridays.

Golf on the Lake Michigan shore. The championship courses north of Milwaukee draw golfers from across the country. Groups with clubs and luggage need a cabin with a large baggage hold, so a midsize jet or a large turboprop may suit better than a light jet.

Green Bay. On home game weekends, private traffic into the Green Bay area rises. Book early and expect drop-and-go arrangements if parking is tight.

Lake Geneva. Not to be confused with the Swiss city, this resort area in the south-east of the state is popular with Chicago and Milwaukee families in summer.

A large share of Wisconsin's private traffic arrives from outside the state: Chicago families heading to lake houses, golfers from the coasts, and business visitors to Milwaukee and Madison. If you are flying in, the same logic applies in reverse. Pick the airport closest to where you will spend your time, not the one with the best-known name. Milwaukee Mitchell suits downtown and the lakeshore; Madison suits the capital and the south-west; and the small regional airports suit resorts and cabins. Wisconsin and Chicago

South-east Wisconsin sits close to the Illinois border, and some travellers wonder whether to use a Chicago-area airport instead. For a trip starting in Kenosha or Racine, or for a group gathering from both states, it can make sense. For most trips starting in Milwaukee, flying from Milwaukee avoids the traffic on the interstate south and is simpler. We compare both when it is a close call. Seasons in Wisconsin

Summer is peak season for leisure flights: lake houses, Door County, golf and festival weekends in Milwaukee. Afternoon thunderstorms are the main weather issue.

Autumn brings colour tours, football weekends and often calm flying weather.

Winter is long and cold. Snow and freezing drizzle mean de-icing before departure, and some small northern airports may be less practical in heavy snow.
