Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA)

Santa Barbara Airport is the region's main airport for both airlines and private aircraft. It is owned and operated by the City of Santa Barbara, which has run it since 1941, although it sits next to Goleta and the University of California campus, roughly ten miles west of downtown. The city's ownership of an airport outside its own centre is the result of a narrow strip of annexed land that runs out along the coast, much of it under the ocean, a local curiosity explained in this history.

For private flyers, the important point is the mix of traffic. The airport has an airline terminal, but according to the city, general aviation makes up more than two-thirds of aircraft operations. Business aviation has its own facilities away from the airline terminal, so private passengers arrive, meet the crew and board without going through the public building.

Getting to the airport

From downtown Santa Barbara, the drive to SBA along US-101 is usually short. From Montecito, Hope Ranch or the Riviera, allow a little longer at busy times. Travellers staying in the Santa Ynez Valley can reach the airport over the mountain pass or along the coast. Because there is essentially one main road along this coast, it is worth checking traffic before you leave, particularly on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends.

Weather and terrain on the Santa Barbara coast

Santa Barbara's climate is famously mild, but the coast has its own patterns that affect flying.

• Marine layer. Low cloud often forms over the ocean overnight and drifts in over the coast, especially in late spring and early summer. It usually burns off by late morning. Aircraft operate in it routinely, but it can slow arrivals and departures, so an afternoon departure is sometimes smoother than a dawn one.
• Mountains behind the city. The Santa Ynez Mountains rise steeply just north of the coast. Crews plan approaches and departures with the terrain in mind, which is routine but is one of the reasons operators prefer experienced crews on this airport.
• Fire season and winter storms. Wildfires in the hills and heavy winter rain have both, in the past, closed stretches of Highway 101. When the road is cut, the airport becomes the main way in and out, and demand for private flights can rise suddenly.

What stands out:

• The Bay Area is a short hop. San Francisco is about an hour and a quarter by turboprop in the model, well suited to a same-day return.
• Texas by turboprop is the budget option but a long flight. Most travellers choose a faster light or midsize jet for trips of more than four hours.
• Chicago is quicker than Houston in the model because the category changes to a faster light jet.
• Atlanta and Toronto need a midsize jet to fly nonstop in the model. Toronto is international: plan for Canadian entry rules on arrival and U.S. customs on the return.

What shapes the price of a private jet from Santa Barbara

1. Positioning. Relatively few charter aircraft are based in Santa Barbara itself. Many come from the Los Angeles area, so the time to fly up empty to collect you, and back again after dropping you off, is often part of the price.
