Cincinnati Municipal Lunken Airport, usually just called Lunken, is owned by the city and lies in the Little Miami and Ohio River valley a few miles east of downtown. It was once Cincinnati's main airport. Airline service moved to the larger airport in Kentucky decades ago, and Lunken became the home of private aviation, corporate flight departments and flight training.

For most private travellers living in the eastern and northern suburbs, including Hyde Park, Indian Hill, Mariemont, Anderson and the neighbourhoods along the river, Lunken is a short drive. There are no airline crowds, parking is close to the aircraft, and the airport is built around the kind of flying that private travellers do.

The river and "Sunken Lunken"

Lunken's riverside position gives it a long history with the water. The airport earned the nickname "Sunken Lunken" after the great Ohio River flood of 1937 left the airfield submerged, as AOPA and Wikipedia recount, and flood protection has been part of the airport's story ever since. Serious flooding is rare today, but the valley setting still matters for flying: morning fog can collect in river valleys, particularly in spring and autumn, and can delay early departures until it lifts. CVG: the airline hub in Kentucky

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, known by its code CVG, is in Boone County, Kentucky, south-west of downtown Cincinnati. It is the region's commercial airport and also a major cargo hub, so it is busy around the clock with freight aircraft as well as airline flights.

CVG handles private flights too, and it is the natural choice in some situations:

• You are coming from Northern Kentucky or the western side of the metro, where CVG is the shorter drive.

Two things stand out. First, four of the six trips are under two hours: short enough for a genuine day trip, with a morning meeting at the other end and dinner back home in Cincinnati. Second, the jump from Toronto to New York is larger than the distance suggests, because the estimate reflects more flying time, and busier, more expensive airports at the New York end.
