It is operated by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, handles large business jets on long runways, and has U.S. Customs and Border Protection on the field, which matters for collectors arriving directly from Europe, Latin America or the Caribbean (CBP publishes an Opa-locka fact sheet; check current hours and notice when you book). The drive to Miami Beach runs south-east across the city, usually via one of the northern causeways, and suits guests staying in mid-Beach, North Beach or Bal Harbour.

Miami International Airport (MIA)

Miami International is the closest airport to Miami Beach by straight line, and in our data it sits about 7 nautical miles from Opa-locka. It is a major commercial hub, so business jet movements share the airspace with airline traffic. For a guest staying in South Beach, downtown or on Brickell, it can mean the shortest drive; for a very large aircraft, it offers the most room. The trade-off is a busier airfield and, in December, one of the busiest travel periods of the year for the airport as a whole.

Fort Lauderdale Executive and the north

Some visitors stay further north, in Fort Lauderdale or on the beaches between the two cities, and prefer to land closer to their hotel. Fort Lauderdale Executive, about 18 nm north of Opa-locka in our data, is the usual option for them, and it also absorbs overflow traffic when the Miami-area ramps are full. The drive south to the Convention Center is longer, so this works best for guests who will visit the fair on selected days rather than every day.

Fair week on the ground: causeways, ramps and timing

Two things become scarce during Miami Art Week: parking space for aircraft and road space on the causeways.

On the ground, the Convention Center sits in the middle of Miami Beach, and fair-week traffic, road closures for events and ordinary holiday-season congestion combine on the causeways at the start and end of each day. The practical answer is to choose a hotel and airport that minimise causeway crossings, and to have a driver who knows the week's traffic patterns. Some visitors stay on the Beach for the fair days and move to the mainland for the Design District and Wynwood; others do the opposite.

At the airports, ramp parking for business jets is finite. Operators book parking with the FBO at the destination, and during fair week the most popular ramps fill well ahead. If parking is not available, the aircraft may drop you in Miami and reposition to another airport, returning to collect you when you leave. That is routine, but it adds flight time to the bill, so it is worth booking early.

December is also the start of South Florida's dry season, when conditions are generally mild and pleasant. That makes weather less of a planning risk than during summer, although winter fronts and morning fog can still delay flights on the east coast of the United States, particularly at your departure airport.
