Congonhas: São Paulo's airport inside the city

Congonhas is unusual among major airports because the city has grown all around it. It sits in the south zone, close to the financial districts along Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima and Avenida Engenheiro Luís Carlos Berrini. For a domestic private flight, that closeness is hard to beat: a meeting in Itaim Bibi and a take-off can be separated by a short drive, traffic permitting.

That central position comes with constraints. According to Wikipedia's Congonhas article, the airport's runways are relatively short for its traffic and it is surrounded by dense housing. Two consequences matter for private flights.

The night curfew. Congonhas has a night-time restriction on operations, roughly from late evening to early morning. Brazil's civil aviation agency, ANAC, has published a 2026 rule on exceptional completion of operations after 23:00, but you should never plan a private flight on the assumption that an exception will be granted. If your schedule runs late, a different airport may be the safer choice.

Aircraft size and performance. Light, midsize and super midsize jets are the natural fit. Heavier aircraft may face weight limits for take-off on a hot day, which affects fuel and range. The operator will calculate this for your date and load.

Three factors make Guarulhos the right answer for many trips:

• Long-range aircraft. Its runways are suited to heavy and ultra-long-range jets that may be uncomfortable at a city airport.

The trade-off is the drive. Guarulhos sits outside the city, and the road into the centre and the south zone can take a long time at peak hours. Many travellers solve that with a helicopter.

A helicopter can connect Guarulhos with a helipad near your meeting or hotel in a short flight, avoiding a drive that might take far longer. When neither Congonhas nor Guarulhos fits, there are options beyond the radius of the table above.

Viracopos in Campinas. Viracopos International Airport lies north-west of São Paulo, near Campinas. It has international facilities and long runways, according to Wikipedia. It suits trips to Campinas and the interior of the state, and sometimes serves as an alternative when São Paulo's main airports are busy.

Business aviation airports outside the city. Private airports for business aviation have been developed in the São Paulo region in recent years. Whether one of them suits your trip depends on customs status, the aircraft and your final destination. We check this with the operator before suggesting any of them.

Coastal and country destinations. Weekend trips to the coast, to country houses in the interior or to farms in Mato Grosso often use smaller airfields. A turboprop or light jet may be the right tool for those.

Domestic or international: the question that decides the airport

Domestic flights within Brazil. Congonhas is usually the first choice, especially if you are staying in the south zone or the financial districts.
